Could someone please help me on a usb hard drive that is driving me mad
All I would like to do is upload my photos, holiday video’s, music etc. To my 500G usb hard drive so I can take it to family and friends to show them on their PC. I can view all the folders and files on my new usb hard drive on my pc, but when I try it on anyone else’s pc, All I get is some of the folders and none of the files. Is there any way of altering the security settings, so I can open all the files on any PC.
My operating system is Vista Business, but all my friends seem to be running XP
I would be grateful for any help
    Bob

PS Thanks for a great looking and informative forum

How did you upload the photos, videos and music to the 500GB hard drive?
What extension is on your photos? If it is a strange extension, like Kodak Easyshare and your friends do not have that program installed, they might not be able to see the photos.

    Hi plodr
    Thanks for the reply
all I did was cut and paste from my internal hard drive to the usb 500g, all pic's are JPEG, Video Divx, and Music MP3 and I know that the other pc's have all the correct codec etc

    Hope this helps

Cut and paste isn't the proper way.
Have TWO explorer windows open - one showing your external drive and the other showing a file with your pictures.
Select one picture to start and hold down the right mouse button. Drag the picture to the external hard drive and release the right mouse button. In the menu that pops up, select - copy here.
Once you get the hang of it, you can select several pictures - but watch the size because your external hd might be formatted FAT32 and if the size gets close to 4GB, it will not copy. You will have corrupted files on your hands.

Hi, plodr. I'm interested because I also do a lot of copying music, pictures, videos, etc. to an external hard disk for back-up purposes. I always just select multiple files from my internal hard drive, right click on the selected, choose Copy, open the correct folder in my external hard drive, right click and choose paste. Or I sometimes just click and drag the selected from the internal to the external NTFS hard drive. (Not RIGHT-CLICK and drag like you mentioned, just click and drag.) It's always worked fine, but will it cause problems? And how are the results of each method, including the one you suggested, different? Thanks.

I use copy and past for text. I have never used it to "paste" files, photos, music, etc. so I don't know if it causes problems. But it seemed to create a problem for you in this instance.

    From here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut_and_paste
it appears that you can copy and paste anything.
I don't know the size of the clipboard. Maybe you tried to copy too much? I'd assume though that windows would shoot up an error message if that were the case.

hello. It seems as if it would be simpler just to use "send to" to put onto the external drive.

Yes, I guess that would be simpler. But that would copy the files to the root folder of the external drive, wouldn't it? :) It's much more convenient to copy the files directly to the folder or subfolder they were intended to be kept in. :)

    Hi All
Thanks for all your input, but all my files are on the 500g usb hard drive as when I unplug the usb all the files are gone not even any still on my internal hd and when I plug it back in hay presto windows finds H drive and all my files are there, its only when I plug the usb hard drive into someone else’s pc no files can he found even though the hd is found by windows

    Thanks again

I use my external hard drive on different computers and I've never had a problem. Some are running on Vista Ultimate and some on XP, too.

Have you tried copying all your files back into your internal hard drive to see if they aren't corrupted?

When you're sure that your files are back in your internal hard drive and they're all intact, try reformatting your EXTERNAL hard drive then COPY (don't MOVE) the files from your internal hard drive to the external hard drive as plodr suggested.

hello again. Your USB drive works on your machine, but not on others? Did you change properties on USB to be hidden? Other machines may need to be changed to show hidden files and folders when USB is plugged in.
