my buddies who are tech geeks at $hi* Buy (best buy...keeps slipping sorry)...well they swear by counterspy...anyone use it? apparently it's not a memory hog like spysweeper if you subscribe or want to subscribe for real time protection and apparently one of the best, if not...the best.

I have not used it myself but I have heard some good things about it. It is available on MG's for download: CounterSpy This is a 15 day trial.

Chas', i couldn't believe that my Nikon software had spyware in it, stuff ad-aware and spybot didn't detect (along with microsofts)...unreal...not impressed with Nikon, it had a mirar toolbar agent in it, along with a couple of others...that counterspy caught.

It is sometimes a matter of personal choice as to what some programs consider malware and others do not.

And then sometimes, it is also a matter of what they know about and what they have programmed into there detections list.

Just like so many programs spend lots of time telling you about MRUs and Cookies which are not really problems in most cases. But that is a personal choice on the end user's part.

Are you sure it came with your Nikon software?

positive, it was found in the folder itself...tagged with the name Nikon, i would bet my money on it...
i know you might say otherwise but, im sure of it...and it wasn't the mirar toolbar, it was a key logging agent....forgot the name, but im reinstalling the software again tomorrow, so ill run counterspy and tell you what exactly it was.

I'm not saying it is impossible but it would not do to much for Nikon's image to send out malware infested software. But again, what we all consider malware, many companies do not. For example, look how many use Backweb. Also look at how many (like AOL) put WildTangent on you PC. And there are many more. I'm not saying I agree with it, all I'm saying is for some items, there can be considerable debate on what is good and what is bad.

A couple of things that push my buttons and that makes me consider things malware:
    - anything installed covertly (Viewpoint Manager, WildTangent and many more)
    - anything from any company that does not have a proper full easily run uninstall that actually works.

well firefox doesn't have an uninstall ;)
but i agree, makes me wonder what the company has in their agenda if there isn't an uninstall feature...

That's true too. But at least if you delete the folder, it does not recreate itself.
