Wondering if anyone knows of a good program that counts and tallys characters?

We have a program here that a tech guy wrote a long time ago but will not work on WinXP OS.

We are a sign shop and occassionally on big jobs, we have used this program to tally up the number of A, B, C's that are in the numerous readings. It will calculate everything that you type in so upper case letters are counted as well as lower case letters this also includes commas, periods, amperstans, numbers etc.

Hoping to upgrade system to WinXP but this is one of those hurdles we have deal with before proceeding. Any suggestions?

    thanks

first thing I need to know is what the program is that you're using to make the signs.

Well, the program in question is not the one that we use to make the signs.

The program in question is a simple DOS-based program that just runs through the various readings that are typed in, then tallys up the individual characters and kicks out how many capital A's there are; how many capital B's and so on.

    Hope that helps...

Install a second hard drive on your PC. Use this for an XP clean install.Buy the upgrade product, no need to buy a "FULL" version. Yesterday I noticed that the upgrade to XP Pro was cheaper than the upgrade to XP Home. Can't figure that one out. An upgrade package will save you lots of $$$ as well. Xp will automatically keep your old drive info on your old drive and will make your PC a dual boot PC. Much better, neater and less problems, all around.

This way you keep your old program running on your old hard drive and do a fresh install on the new drive. Hope this helps. Bazza

Not exactly what I was after. I'm assuming your tech guy wrote this program because there was nothing out there that could do such a thing. Is this file that is produced that holds the capital letters a simple text file? if it's just a text file, then it would be easy to help you, or you could go with Bazza's idea :)
