And now, the wife's laptop! Some notes:

    XP Internet Security 2010 infection

    Started on Jeanne (infected)
    • Ran SAS, needed reboot
    • Upon reboot, unable to run EXE files ("What program would you like to use to open this file?")

    Switched to Bruce (not infected?)
    • Retrieved SAS log from Application Data folder for other user
    • Installed MBAM, updated manually
    • Ran MBAM
    • Prompted for a restart

Switched to Jeanne to try running EXE files
    • Still failed

    Switched back to Bruce
    • Disabled SEP
    • Ran ComboFix
      • No Recovery Console installed
      • ComboFix restarted the computer
      • Tried to install Recovery Console by drag&dropping the installer onto the ComboFix icon
        • 'SWSC' is not recognized
    • Ran RootRepeal
    • Ran MGTools

Logs are attached. This one is a bit odd.

The logs you attached are clean. And I do not see a "Jeanne" account listed.

Indeed, XP Internet Security itself does appear to be gone.

For some reason, "Jeanne" is being displayed as "Jeanne" only on the login page and in the User Accounts Panel, but as "user" everywhere else (file/directory paths).

I still cannot run EXE files on "Jeanne" (I get the "Open With" dialog box). This started occurring after I ran SAS. When I try to open the "User Accounts Panel" on "Jeanne", I get the error:
    Even though the file exists.

    =/

    Thanks Tim!

    :confused

Not that I can see in this thread. I'll run it and get back to you.

EDIT: That seems to have fixed the EXE problem. Hurray! Thanks a bunch Tim!

P.S.: I think maybe your post (#3) got cutoff?

I knew I had someone run that exe file fix, but I have napped since then. My post #3 was not cut off. Just a statement that the account the scans were run on were clean and that there was no Jeanne account listed in your logs.

What issues are you still having? Have you run the scans on the Jeanne account?

Well, the EXE file association fix did fix the inability to run EXE files.

I have not yet run the scans on Jeanne/user, but I can do that once I get back to the computer (tonight/tomorrow).

And here are the logs (finally!). I was out of town for a couple of weeks. The logs were taken right before I left, and the computer has not been used since, so I doubt anything has changed.

The only thing I would question on this account is this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\GyBl5ci

If you are having issues with this user account, you should post in the software section. You may need to create a new account and transfer your data over to that account.

What issues are you presently having?

I haven't noticed any other problems with the account, but I haven't been really thorough in testing it either.

    Good to know.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
