My daughter's computer is being a real dog. Have done all the malware and virus checks, coming up with nothing. I even got talked into the Uniblue's RegisteryBooster 2010 and it's not made a bit of difference from what I can see. The CPU jumps from 7% - 10% Sounds pretty low! there are 39 processes running from a fresh boot up. I have unchecked as many start ups as I think I can and when I look at the processes I don't know what I can stop and what I can't plus I read that if I quit the process they will just start up again after a re-boot. So because I do not know I am coming to you, the gurus. I tried to remove programs I didn't think she needed also. I attached a hifackthis file. looks like there is a bunch of junk on there but I am afraid to delete without guidance.

    Thanks for your help!

What version of windows is running? Make and model of computer? How much RAM? About how old is the computer?
Some problems might be hardware and until you give more info, we have no idea what sort of computer your daughter has.

    Windows XP
HP Pavilion AMD Athlon XP 3000+
    2.16 GHz, 448 MB RAM
Not sure how old..... it's not new

448 MB. Probably a 512 MB stick with some dedicated to onboard video. That's not a lot of RAM, even for XP. Low memory is most likely part of the problem, if not the main one.

So then this is my dilemma...... My daughter is going to be a Senior in High School. She is a year away from getting a laptop to take to college. I don't want to get her the laptop now so is there anything I can do to make her "old" computer run a little better to get her through the next year? someone told me that there can be stuff running on the computer that is sapping the RAM that we don't know is running so how do I figure out what I can take off (and how) as to not waste any of the RAM we have.
    Thanks

    Hello, SandraS

*Adding another 1gb of RAM (the minimum we suggest for XP) should cost you less than $40.

Please run the below tool and attach the log, so someone can help you.

    Code:
    Go [URL="http://bamajim.com/Tools/FileLister.zip"][color=blue][b]HERE[/b][/color][/URL] and download [B]File Lister[/B].
    [LIST]
    [*]Save it to your Desktop
    [*][B]Right [/B]Click ->> [B]Extract all[/B] ->> And extract it to your Desktop
[*]Additional help on extracting zip files can be found [URL="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html"]HERE[/URL]
    [*]Open the File Lister Folder.
[*]Right Click [B]FileLister.vbe[/B] ->>Select [B]Open[/B] Then Open to confirm.
[*]As the program runs, it will appear that nothing is happening.
[*]When the program is finished it will produce a log for you located at [B]C:\Files.txt[/B]
    [/LIST]
