CPU cooler compatibility: socket 1366 & 2011

I can't seem to get a straight answer: is a CPU cooler that fits a socket 1366 going to work with the socket 2011? Most of the info online says "No", but a local PC shop says "Yes". I think the PC shop is wrong. If socket 1366 and 2011 have the same mounting hole dimensions, why would there be cooler adapter mechanisms available? For example: I have a brand new Hyper212+ from CoolerMaster that was purchased before the 2011 socket was released; the Hyper212+ is compatible with the 1366 i7 socket, but CoolerMaster has an adapter bracket to allow use with the 2011 socket. If the sockets were the same, why would a different bracket be needed?

Bottom line: is a cooler that fits the 1366 Intel socket going to mount on a 2011 Intel socket w/o any add-on adapter bracket?

I also have the 212+ and heard the same thing about a free bracket from CM but I would think that both brackets would have to be different, perhaps longer?:confused Trolling through CM's site said nothing about that.

Hmm, I might have been mistaken.:-o The 212+ for socket 2011 is Hyper 212S. I believe I was thinking of this [http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=40&lng=en"]Noctua[/URL].

I am not a hardware guru like augiedoggie but I did come across this. With the LGA 2011 Intel is bracing the socket right up to the mounting holes which do have the same distance as the LGA1366. I am assuming the CM bracket is used because of this design.

I see augiedoggie already posted about the cooler. ;)

It turns out that the hole spacing for 2011 is the same as 1366, but the way the coolers mount is totally different. The 1366 uses the same type stock heatsink that the 775 socket uses: there's holes in the mobo for mounting the cooler. A 2011 socket has holes but they do not go all the way thru the board, they're blocked by all the metal around the CPU socket and there's little threaded "holes" for mounting the CPU. The Hyper212+ as it shipped a few months ago w/o the adapter does NOT mount on a 2011 socket. The pressure bracket is about a quarter-inch to high above where it should make contact with the cooler, this means that there is no pressure, and the cooler essentially falls off....

Problem solved! Question answered! Lesson learned!
