cpu fan noise

I have a stupid question i've recently noticed i've been getting some chattering noise (it's not real loud) from my cpu fan is that normal?

 

Depends, not usually. Look at the sucker, it you can see varience in the spin rate replace it immediately, the CPU can be at risk.

Most fans make noise before failing, and the CPU fan is a critical component. The other side is you can usually see it failing, so if the noise isn't extreme and the speed is constant it becomes call you have to make. By critical, if it fails, and the motherboard isn't set to detect it, you can kiss your CPU and possibly the motherboard goodbye.

 

I've check more then once and it seems to be spinning ok and right now it's quite.

 

If it is a noise that comes and goes, check your wires. One of the CPU fan power wires may be physically brushing against the blades. The prescence of noise in moving parts is normally due to physical friction.

Open the case and see if their is much movement in the wires when you move the case.

 

Just opened my computer and checked for wires hitting the cpu fan and there were none (as there should be because it's a gateway computer)lol, and now it's quite, i useally have music or a pc game running on my computer so i might not have noticed it before because i do a lot of downloading. plus reseating it's case also might have helped plus i did move my computer while the case was open and no wires moved.

 

I cleaned out my computer and that seems to have helped.

 

Fans will chatter when dirt buildup takes the blades out of balance, they will also chatter when the sleve or bearing wears out and the shaft has a lot of play. ed

 

If it is on a Dell it is a common occurance. I have repl the fan on mine twice and my daughter and friend have repl theirs once each. I love my Dell but wish they would address that annoying feature.
