Will a processor that is in a LGA1150 socket work in a LGA1155 socket. I read in some places that their numbers come up in some motherboards but no getting in depth on interchangeable. THX

 

No! Don't even try it! Understand the number (1150 and 1155) refers to the number of pins in the socket. Those pins correspond to the number and layout of the pins on the CPU. They are NOT interchangeable.

To find out what processors will work with your motherboard, visit your motherboard's website. You should then find the QVL (qualified vendors list) (typically listed under Support). This is a list of CPUs the motherboard maker has ensured works with that specific motherboard. Use only listed CPUs.

Most makers also list a RAM QVL listing compatible RAM. However, there are way too many RAM makers and models for board makers to test them all so unlike CPUs, you don't have to buy listed RAM. But you do need to buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

 

Thank you, I never knew the number signified the number of pins. And now that makes sense. I have a i7-4770 (3.40 ghz) processor that the board will not take the Win 10 upgrade no matter what I try (after reading to many threads). I see more boards with the 1155 socket and the boards I find with the 1150 socket (the reviews are not to good). So I can only assume the boards with the 1150 socket are on their way out.

 

Without specifics, I cannot comment on the poor reviews you are seeing. There is no reason the type socket should affect review results - at least not an honest unbiased review.

Intel is famous (infamous) for changing sockets.

As for W10, once again you need to visit your motherboard's website - this time to look for BIOS and driver updates to see if versions for W10 are available.
