    hey guys,
i am running an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ barton core

i was wondering if its worth upgrading to an XP 3200+ ?

i dont want to spend so much on a new AMD64 system

would i get much benifit out of it?

Not at the prices thare going for now ... I dont see why the barton you have now wont do 3200+ speeds. I read in your other thread that your open to overclocking.

yes i am open to overclocking a have done it b4 and got a stable 2.3ghz with the stock heatsink and fan.. would a better cooler and ram make it more stable if i try and push for faster speeds?

No! The benefit would be negligble. Save your money for the newer AMD 64s. If you want better performance try adding more RAM.

How do you know how much ram he has now?? ...And as for saving $ he can overclock his rig he has now and make it last another year thus saving even more $ for a new system . Its not a good time to buy hardware IMO. It would be best to wait out the "tech wars" and get the lower prices that it will make later down the road. Then again this is just my POV.

lol yes i think i will wait, what can be a reasonable limit that i can clock my rig too?

i have a AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton core,
    512mb A-Data DDR400
    ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Mobo
    Radeon 9600 Pro,
anything else u need to know just ask :)

Have you read the overclocking guide ? If you whant help with overclocking make a new thread in the OC forum ;). The hardware forum is to busy for me . Just tell what you do with your system most.

mostly for gaming, im finding that i cant run new games with high settings,
so i wanna boost my comp with minimal money involved!

Well your 9600 is your limiting factor... Is it 128Bit ?

    yes it is unfortunatly :(

what would be the best (reasonable) upgrade for that?

    i was thinking of a 9800pro..

    any suggestions?

Now thare ya go changing links on me :p... well NM i got the the cards confused.
But your card is your bottleneck when it comes to gaming... And yes a 9800 whould be a nice and relatively cheap speed boost.

i did have a X700 not long ago but i dont know what happened, it decided to stop working, when ever i try and put that card back in my sytem it wont even boot... fans spin and hard drive goes but no beep at boot, no picture or anything.. i was devastated when it decided to crap itself, i tried it in another computer and the same problem occurs.. have u heard of anything like this before?

If you would have read the question Ace256, he asked about upgrading from a 2600 to a 3200 CPU, correct? Overclocking and buying a new CPU are two DIFFERENT things! As for the RAM, no I didn't know how much he had, but I do now and my suggestion still stands, whether you agree or not.

He whants to "upgrade" as in make his system faster. As you can obviously see were not just talking about a CPU.

@lowie57: I start my new job today. Its a "where done, when were done" thing, so i donno when i will be back online.
