Hello all, I recently built my own computer. I just got XP in today and installed it on my computer. I can play games very well, runs perfectly. But there's one problem. I ordered an AMD Athlon 2500.. and it runs at 1.1 gigz. Well at least that's what I get when I right click my computer and go to properties. If I run DXdiag I get the same speed. What's up?

What does it say during the POST?

If the POST is the boot up screen it says like 1,1099 mhz or something along those lines.

I had the same problem with computer. I ordered a mobo/cpu combo. ASUS A7N8X-DLX with a AthlonXP +2600, which should run at ~2.08 GHz. When I first put it together it ran at that speed, but after sometime, for some reason it dropped to ~1.1 GHz. Come to find out, my bios settings got messed up somehow. I had re-ajust the frequency at which to processor ran. Don't exactly recall what it was. Consult your mobo manual for correct settings.

But mine is a 2.5 gigz running at 1.1!!!!

As far as AMD Athlons are concerned... The 2500 does not mean they run at 2.5Ghz. All that means that they comperable to Intel's 2.5Ghz processors. If you have Athlon XP 2500, that means it runs roughly around 2.0Ghz, I'm not sure of the exact speed rating. If you can't even get that much, that means the your BIOS is not set up correctly, or may not even support that high of speeds. Check your manual. The way to set up the right frequency is to go to the BIOS through the CMOS at boot, usually pressing DEL key will get you into the main BIOS set up screen. Once there look for options having to do with frequency and such. Thing to remember is your FSBxMultiplier=CPU speed. If you don't feel comfortable with working in the BIOS then don't, you may cause some major damage if you get the frequencies wrong, mainly frying your CPU. Consult your mobo book. Good Luck

For XP 2500 In Bios multiplier is 11 and FSB will be set to 166
    Look Here:

Here is Bios Guide You probably have other setting's that should be changed:

chopinpl is quite right. You could have a look at AMD's list of specs for the Athlon family
here. The AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton) has performance similar to the Intel 2500MHz chip, but is actually designed to run at 1833MHz.

Clock multipliers and FSB frequencies for AMD's Athlon chips are also shown on AMD's page. They're useful for setting up the appropriate specs in your CMOS setup.

I installed my XP 2500+ on an Asus A7V8X-X board, and was somewhat surprised to find that it was running at 1466MHz. I had to set both the multiplier and the FSB frequency to AMD's specs myself. You may have to do likewise.

Holy Crap, I just had a little bit of a scare. I guess my AthlonXP 2600+ is base on the Thoroughbred core because it runs at 2.83Ghz. At first gaze of that link, I looked at the Barton core cpus and thought mine is only supposed to run at around 1.9Ghz. Thanks for that link, that's a really good source for detailed info about the processors.....
