CPU running 100%

Can anyone help please ?

Im running a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop (P4 3GHz, 1 Gig RAM).

Its been fine for nine months, but has started to grind to a halt in last couple of weeks.

Im running XP SP2, fully updated.

Also running Norton Internet Security 2005, fully updated.

Have recently downloaded SpyBot too.

CPU jumps to 100% with just a couple of basic windows open (Digital TV & Opera Browser for example) which it handled fine before.

No indication of any problem in any of the above, nor in System messages.

I have now gone through your excellent 'Basic guide to remove Spyware' page, but still hit the same problem.

Any ideas ?

In taskmgr>processes which executable is using the highest cpu?

Answer Kadavill's question and then please follow the steps below exactly:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
