but i have nothing except the standard processes running. I just did a reformat and reinstall of windows XP because of this issue. Now after the reinstall (which took FOREVER) Its still running at 100%. Is my CPU shot? Does it need to be cooled better? I thought the slowness might have been a HD issue, till I discovered that my CPU was at 100% most of the time. My machine runs on a Pentium 4, 2.2ghz w 256mb of RAM. As of right now all i have is a basic install of windows XP professional. Could after a reformat a virus still exist? I had one before the reinstall and am wondering if it could stay on there. No partitions were spared in the reformat. the whole entire 80gb drive was deleted.

    Thanks for your help

If you hit CTRL_ALT_DEL which process/es are taking up your CPU time?

Try Process Explorer. Halohttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/cool.gif recommended it to me, a while ago. I have it on, almost permanently. Essential, IMHO, for what ails your PChttp://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4566
