I've been working with someone in the Malware forum who suggested posting here with a link to that thread.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1226560#post1226560

A few days ago the PC started spiking to 100% CPU, and running very slowly.

I've run through all the Malware steps with no luck, and the Malware helper thinks it has something to do with having too much on the desktop.

I have deleted most everything on the desktop but the problem persists.

Just thought I would include your memory details for the benefit of others assisting you in this thread.

Could you post the screenshot when the CPU is spiking to 100% and not when sys idle is at 99%
    Cheers...

Here is one with CPU at 99%.

CLI.exe, which is using 50% is part of your ATI graphics card and the Catalyst Control Center. You have 3 instances of it. Apparently 3 CLIs is the norm.
    I found this
That might be what is using your CPU spikes.
and this looks like a possible solution

In all the screenies I see an exclamation mark in the sys tray. What's happening there??

"Move your attention to your START UP programs and post a clear screenshot of that instead."

I'm not sure how to see that. In START-PROGRAMS-STARTUP the only application showing is Wlanutility.

BTW for the CLI I tried disabling it but that had no affect. I tried removing it from the registry as directed by some of the links, but CLI still ran the next time the computer booted.

Here is an image of startup from msconfig.

I disabled the CLI.exe shown there. The problem persisted after reboot.

Off topic but where is your AV. Did you check out whatever is giving you grief in the system tray.

What is AV? Nothing is giving grief in the system tray. I think what you took for an exclamation point is the icon for the wireless network manager.

    AV = Anti virus

fjccommish was using AVG8 when I saw them last in malware..

Thanks Kestrel. But I don't see it in the msconfig screenie! That why I asked.
Also the math on sys idle and CPU usage does not tally. Cheers...

AVG was on the machine when the problem began.

I removed it in the process of trying to fix the issue. Someone advised to try removing it.

If reinstalling it will fix the problem I'll do it, but it was running when this began.

    AVG has been reinstalled.

Here is a new screenshot of the startup in msconfig.

Just to add - Turn msconfig back to normal startup before using "Start up CPL. Cheers...

"MG recommends uninstalling Java Runtime completely, restarting your system, and installing the new version afresh."

That was done before posting in the malware section. All the old java versions were removed and the latest is the only one on the system. Jusched has been removed from startup as has Reader_sl.

I installed and used the Startup_CPL tool.

The spikes to 100% CPU persist.

Is CLI.exe still consuming 50% ofyour CPU.
I don't want to sound intrusive, but any chance Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) giving you GUFF in the sys tray. Seriously, what is it!!!!
