    Hello,
my laptop has slowed so much that it's about to go out the window! It's slow on start-up, slow on exiting windows..slow on pretty much everything. As soon as I hit "enter" for a web page the cpu reading for iexplore.exe and sometimes avp.exe in Task Manager hits above 50% and frequently hits 100%, even when I am not touching the mouse it's still working hard spiking frequently. (It's impossible to use Google maps)
I have completed the READ AND RUN, SAS AND MALBytes, deleted unwanted programs, updated everything plus reset IE and downloaded latest Java, tried everything I could (took me 2 days!). I'd really appreciate any possible causes and solutions.

Appologies if I have posted in the wrong place.

    Thanks,
    Poppicat

Give me your system's specification and I can make a better judgment.
I see your using Kaspersky Anti-virus, Kaspersky 2012 is pretty resouse intensive sometimes so you might want to lower the scanning degree and settings Only if you are sure you won't be needing deep scan mode on. As I know you would be far better off if you downloaded KAV 2011 because I have found that it runs so much smoother.

There's no huge difference and still offers 'Cloud Protection' and all the security features that KAV 2012 has to offer.
You can downgrade for free, just remember when uninstalling the current version to tick 'Keep Activation Data' because that contains your user license.
    Download Here: http://products.kaspersky-labs.com/english/homeuser/kav2011/

!!! How can you tell What Anti-Virus this person is using. All i see is malwarebytes. And Super AntiSpyware.
If you are using Super Anti-Spyware i would say that could be your problem.

Greetings, poppicat, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

Try this: boot into Safe Mode and see if your symptoms change. If so, then some third-party software is probably causing the sluggishness - let us know the results and we can probably find the culprit(s).

I agree with DeadArtic about the Kaspersky, but if you do decide to do something about your antivirus protection, I think you would be better served to explore avenues other than rolling back to a previous version. There are some great free alternatives available that should be considered.

Hi and Welcome to the forum, if you have completed the Read and Run then you need to have followed the guide and attach your logs in a new thread/post in the malware forum for the malware experts to review and see if any malware is still present on your PC.

They will give you great advice on how to remove any remaining malwares if you had any to start with, I agree with Caliban and boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose safe mode with networking) and if your PC works ok then its likely you may have a faulting app that boots with your PC or quite possibly too many security applications.

Please name all security applications you have installed (Anitvirus, Firewall, Anti-Malware etc)?

You can run the below guide and attach the log and this will give us a great idea of what you have running at startup.

Hello, and thanks for your help.

My laptop specs: (I hope this is the info you meant)

    Advent 7095
    Intel (R) Celeron (R) M
    Processor 1.50 GHz
    480 MB of RAM

    Windows XP (HE)
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

Hard Drive disc space; 34.1 GB (Total size 51.7 GB)

The only anti-virus I have installed is Kaspersky 2012. I do online banking and as I understand it, my bank requires me to have Kaspersky installed. If ever my account was hacked then my bank would reimburse me for any losses but only as long as I have Kaspersky AV so I don't really want to go with another AV (sods law I would get hacked if I didn't have it!).

I did have SpyBot but uninstalled it after taking the READ and RUN advice to only have one AV. I also downloaded the Super Anti-Spyware, ran/run it, and then uninstalled it on completion and did the same with Malwarebytes.

As suggested by Caliban, I am about to try Safe Mode and will let you know what happens.

    Thanks again,
    Poppicat

    Good morning...

There may be some misunderstanding going on. If you would, please follow the instructions as closely as possible - it may seem tedious and boring, but we have our ways...;)

Please complete these steps, accumulate the required logs, and attach them to your post by starting a new thread in that forum. Let them give you the all-clear, especially since now we know you're handling your money through this machine. There are certain malwares that can disguise themselves very well, and a normal cleaning pass will not expose them - let the experts in the Malware Forum decide if you're clean...

Please do so - merely listing the model number of your computer is not going to help too much. We may be able to spot something from the attached log.

Also, the Advent 7095 can handle up to 1gb of RAM. If you plan to keep this machine, you might consider upgrading your memory which will speed up everything. Just a thought...;)
