Does anybody know how to remove a heatsink that is stuck to the CPU?

So it went like this. I was curious to see how my heatsink came off, because I've never taken it off before. (this is on a Compaq machine by the way). So I manage to get the braces off, but the next thing you know, i pull the heatsink out and the whole CPU comes with it. The problem is that I can't put the CPU back into the socket unless I take the heatsink off of it.

I actually pulled the thing out while it was locked in, but I don't see any damage to the pins or anything so the CPU should be fine. I can't really take a picture because my camera is out of batteries.

So could anybody advise me on how to take a heatsink off of a CPU without damaging it?

    Thanks :D

Ouch! Glad the pins are ok. Here's hopping you didn't manage to break the socket.

The only way I've heard of removing a stuck HS from a CPU is to still have it in the computer... turn the computer on for 10 minutes, then really quickly open it up and take off the heat sink. But since yours is not in the computer, I have no idea. Maybe somehow get it hot but not too hot... maybe a hair dryer is a good idea.

I'd wait for other suggestions from more knowledgeable members before trying the hair dryer idea though.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Ya, hair dryer sounds good PO'edDude, never had to do it, but the running of the proc for 10 mins. worked great when I switched to an X2 from a factory install! Good tip man!

;) I just tried to think of the least damaging thing you could use... and a hair dryer seemed logical. You might want to check how hot your dryer can get, and the max temp of your CPU before you do it though. Every dryer is different, and I've used some that were so hot you couldn't keep your hand in front of it for 5 seconds.

I have done that a time or 2 :( and a hair dryer did work for me just remember TWIST the processor DONT pry up on it and all should be well. Use alcohol to clean both the heatsink and top of the processor(ONLY surface that actually touches heatsink ) unlock the socket, install cpu apply thermal paste and seat heatsink :)

I actually got it off before I got any replies.

What I did was just drip some goo gone onto the heatsink, wait 15 minutes then tap it off. I'm using it right now and nothing's wrong. I'll run a test just to make sure everything's fine. I guess I should have used a hair dryer, but oh well. I got all the stuff reapplied and it's fine right now.

I'll repost if a stress test shows up something wrong.

    Thanks guys!

I've stressed my CPU and nothing seems to be wrong.

    Thanks again!

I just did that myself...argh unlocked the heatsink, and everything comes out... CPU kept shutting itself off after 5 seconds, so I'm going to reapply the thermal paste. My wife gave her hairdryer to her sister, so I've gotta go get a new one! Damn women!
