My previous thread (Need help recovering data from hard drive) explained the following: My computer had been running slower and slower, until the other night when it came to a standstill. The CPU usage was at 100%. I rebooted into safe mode and ran my Norton Internet Security. Nothing was found. Then I ran defrag. It appeared to have defragged successfully, but when I rebooted the computer, it would not boot to the operating system. It just shows a black screen and says "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart" Rebooting just returns the same message. I removed the drive and installed it into an external HD housing......

To make a long story short, I was able to recover some of my data using the free usage of Zero Assumption Recovery. My plan was to put my old, smaller HD into my computer and set it back up for use. Unfortunately, when I installed it and booted it up, it had the same "CPU usage at 100%" problem!!

This is a totally different HD that hasn't been in my computer for a couple of years. I see that there are some "CPU usage 100%" threads under "Malware Removal," but how could BOTH HDs be infected when the old one hasn't even been in the computer? Could it possibly be a hardware problem, like RAM dying or something?

    Hi

Which process is running at 100%? Need to trace what is causing this and common factors are hardware drivers.

Well if not software as you mentioned a new or alternate HD going into the PC, a suspect could be CPU fan clogged up with dust, give PC a clean ( alternative thought ).

when you press ctrl alt del and go to task manager what is the name of the process that is next to 100% usage?

There is no one item that is at 100%. The total CPU usage is at 100%.

    HI

If the older HD is the only one in the PC then likeyhood of you being infected is low, so my thoughts are as mentioned earlier, a dusty case inside as well as a CPU heatsink and fan. Does your CPU fan sound as if its going full speed?
