I have been having an issue with Explorer using 50% of my CPU whenever it opens. Even if I open a new tab it does the same. I have noticed that all my programs seem to be using more of the CPU than seems necessary. I am not sure if this is maleware or corrupted programs. I have downloaded Process Explorer but I'm not sure what it actually does. I am afraid to get to crazy with it because I'm not sure the damage I could create with it(probably extensive). I don't know what info to provide so I will start with the basics:

    XP Home SP3
    Dell Dimension 5150
    Pent D 3.2 GHz
    3 GB ram
    Nvidia Geoforce 9400GT

Let me know what information you need and I will get it. Thanks

    Hi

This could be caused by another application thats called on when the directory of Explorer is opened, so what applciations have you installed before this started happening?

With Process Explorer open and click the CPU line heading so that the processes using most CPU are at the top and list them (just ones using CPU) or take screenshot and attach it here.

Also download CCLeaner and run its cleaner option, then click in CCleaners menu Tools > Startup and list what you have in startup.

Try booting into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and see if same happens.

Common issue is possibly malware and do this guide then start a new fresh thread in the malware forum and attach the requested logs from the guide, so we can rule out malware as the cause.

Please read and follow the following READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide Once finished please start a new thread in the Malware Forum plus a guide on how to attach the logs HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Also as noticing DomLuc's name that reminded me of somfthing else incase its a corrupted file within windows, is to run sfc /scannow to see if you have any corrupted system files, so open a command line prompt/CMD and type sfc /scannow (note the space from c to /)

    Info on SFC

I ran the sfc /scannow and it finished when I was AFK. I don't know if it found anything or not but it was gone when I got back.

    Hi

Nothing major sticks out in your list of processes, idle at 98% is fine, maybe if you dont see this again SFC worked, if you do see explorer.exe hitting 50% again then run the malware guide and attach logs in a new thread in malware.

I just finished running the Malware list. Thanks for the help, I'm wondering if it's a hardware problem? I'm just another NewB needing help from the Pro's. Thanks again

    Hi

Its possible, and just make sure all your devices have latest driver for them, do get from the manufacturers suppoer and driver site these drivers, dont us any driver wizard type application.

But more likely if your still having this is software, so some questions.....

Also download CCLeaner and run its cleaner option, then click in CCleaners menu Tools > Startup and list what you have in startup.

Try booting into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and see if same happens.

What security software do you have installed?

Did the malware list find anything in its run? if not still post in the Malware Forum a new thread and attach the logs and give brief synposis of your issue.

I will check for new drivers. I will look for any threads about loading drivers. I want to make sure I do it right.

I ran CCleaner and the items in my startup are in the attachment.

I ran it in safe mode and I still have the problem in safe mode.

I have AVG(free), spybot, and all the software from the maleware section.

When I ran the maleware scans, it found a couple of items. They are in the logs I placed in the malware section.

    Thanks again

Actually I would ask why Windows Installer is running. ;) Normally it should not be running unless something is being installed or uninstalled. Could be signs of a failed install/uninstall that needs to be cleaned up. Perhaps using Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

I am not sure what to do with the utility, should I pick and choose what I think needs to be removed or remove everything or just clear them. I will wait for a response before i do anything. Thank you.

Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP:
    Quit all Office programs.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. NOTE: In Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.

I tried to remove the ctfmon file by following the directions that were given, also I listed them below but after i expanded the office shared features folder I didnt have an alternitive user input to disable. Not sure whats wrong.

In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.NOTE: In Windows XP, click Add or Remove Programs.

In the Currently installed programs list, click to select Microsoft Office XP product, where Office XP product is the name of the specific Office product being used. If you are using a standalone version of one of the Office programs, click to select the appropriate product in the list. Click Change.
In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select Add or Remove Features, and then click Next. This displays the Choose installation options for all Office applications and tools dialog box.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features to expand it.
Click the icon next to Alternative User Input, and then select Not Available.
    Click Update.

I think I found the problem. I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7. FYI, IE8 is junk. Now I am not even noticing a thing wrong. I wish I would have known it was something stupid. I would like to say that you guys are awesome and really have helped me straighten my computer out. I will be following all of the advice you guys gave on protecting my computer. Thank you so much.
