I am running Windows XP Home Edition. About 20 seconds after windows boots up it suddenly goes to a black screen and then immediately displays a blue page with an error message page for about 1 second. I have attached a picture I took of the error message. My computer then reboots. It does this 2 or 3 times and then after displaying the blue error message it does not reboot but just stays on in a completely unresponsive state. My monitor says "no signal." My computer does not even respond to the restart button. If I then power it off and then on it comes back on in the weird unresponsive state. I have to leave it off for a good 15 minutes before turning it on to get it to boot up and of course crash again.

It just started doing this this morning for no reason that I can I identify. Please help.

I can boot to safe mode no problem. Is there any specific thread in the malware section that would be most helpful?

Re: Crash immediately after boot up

I have that problem once in a while myself. I turn it on and get three beeps. I shut it off and (this is the truth) give the box a swift kick and it starts back up for months. Does this mean my hard drive is on the way out? The computer is 4 years old.

    Thanks and good luck.

    Roy,
Your problem is almost certain to be of a different origin if an engineer's tap works, possibly a poor connection or loose fan blade.

Start your own thread in HARDWARE and we will deal with it.

Well, after getting my computer to reboot in safe mode once I tried to reboot again and now it doesn't even seem to initialize the BIOS, so I can't get into either safe mode or regular.

Oo,please tell me you can boot in to safe mode, cos I don,t want to think that it's a hardware issue. And if you manage to get in to safe mode STAY,don't turn off your comp.BTW some info about your comp?

XPDT.SYS is a rootkit, for which there is no guaranteed cure.
Normal antivirus is ineffective against it.

If you get back on your pc copy off all your data files and driver to somewhere else and plan on a clean reinstallation of Windows in the near future.

If you can get to the net another way post here for more help, even a pm with an email would do.

what about the free softwares for removing rootkits we have here on MG freeware top pick?

The trouble with a rootkit is that it is a 'two part kit'. That is the bit you can see and the bit which cannot be seen from within windows.. No software can guarantee that whilst it can find a given hidden bit, another is not still lurking there. Also some very clever kits can change their signature during a scan, pretending to be something innocuous whilst the focus of the scanner is on them.

If you ever get a chance to go to the Winternals (now owned by Microsoft)lecture on the subject, go -it is fascinating.

Therefore the only guaranteed method of removal is to reformat the drive.

Yes Sony were caught putting a marketing rootkit on a CD.

Rootkits require an administrator account to be able to install themselves. This is why I am always banging on about not surfing as administrator.

Right, when you say not surfing as administrator. And another issue is not much knowing about comps, and what to do in certain situations.OK,we learn from our mistakes (and others).

Wow, you guy's had a long conversation while I was asleep and at work. Sadly, I have not been able to get my computer to boot. I turn it on, and the power light comes on, and the LEDs on my CD drives flash but that's it. No audio or visual output, and the HDD access light never even blinks.

Sorry we got lost in the rootkit discussion.

You need to look inside and see whether you can get the beast to BIOS, by disconnecting everthing that is not essential. Disconnect hard drive, CD, floppy, all stuff connected to serial/parallel/usb etc ports.
Take out all non essential pci cards and all but 1 (2 if dual channel) memory modules. Reseat the remaining one and the processor.

Then if you can get to bios in this condition rebuild one item at a time until you find the rogue.

DONT FORGET TO REMOVE THE POWER LEAD BEFORE WORKING INSIDE.

You should be able to achieve a stable pc you can boot from (windows) cd or boot floppy without a hard drive present.

Once you have regained control of the pc you can resolve the problem on the hard drive.

I can't seem to get it to boot up not matter what I do. This computer is about 6 years old (at least the mother board is) and I have actualy been thinkng about getting a new machine for a month now. I think I'll just take this as a sign from god to buy a new computer.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Last thought before you bin the pc. Motherboard batteries last up to 5 years.
Change yours if the voltage is below 3 volts. They are very cheap.
