Recently (last 6-8 weeks) I have stumbled across the problem of
    i) seti performs an illegal operation and closes, then
ii) my sound suddenly disappears, then
iii) iexplore will perform an illegal operation - option to ignore doesn't work
    iv) computer will freeze
    v) start, shutdown might work but unlikely ctrl, alt, del doesn't do much except eventually give blue screen of death - both usually result in mmtask failure and therefore whole system hangs - forcing use of reset
vi) if system didn't hang at that point it won't reboot anyway- forcing use of reset

    Any clues?

    Oh I'm running
    win98se
    2600+AMD Athlon XP
    K7N2 Series ATX M/board
    256Mb RAM

I used to have similar problems when I was running win98 on a Dell P2. All my problems were solved when I switched to Mac, but that is probably not the solution you want.

You might want to try running scandisk and removing unneccesary files form your PC. If you are running out of disk space, win98 behaves badly. A more involved solution is to reinstall win 98 and try not to have to many programs running at once.

Personally, I would backup my data, format and reinstall, to prevent problems from returning if you can get the fixed.
