Crazy audio problem

I have a crazy audio problem I'm hoping is easy to solve. I recently moved (and my computer and audio was working just fine) but when I plugged everything back in my sound (from rear on-board external analog speakers) no longer worked. In fact, my computer automatically chooses HDMI speakers! I don't even use HDMI!! When I choose playback devices and choose speakers (instead of HDMI or RCA) it says there is nothing hooked up - I use 5.1 surround and three jacks are plugged in, but motherboard shows nothing. If I test the HDMI speakers (even though nothing is plugged in HDMI) the green bar lights up like it is outputting to HDMI. Ugh! I have:
1) updated drivers - video, audio, bios, chipset
2) unplugged the dvi-d cable that I use and plugged in VGA
3) rolled back drivers and then when that didn't work, updated them according to dell
3) rebooted so many times I could barf

Although this may sound strange, I've seen cases where ATI video drivers wreck havoc on audio. The fact that your PC is attempting to default to HDMI audio increases the likelihood this is the issue.

Go to www.ati.com and download/install the latest video driver(s). If this does not solve the problem, try going in reverse by uninstalling the current driver and downloading a slightly older version (equaling the date when you're sure the audio worked properly).

Thanks! I have updated the drivers, however I have not tried changing the order of installation or rolling back. I will let you know how it goes!
