CRC Errors Upon Downloading

Since I have reformatted my PC (about 2/3 weeks ago)... I have been unable to download files from the net, mainly files which are .rar or .zip... Everytime I go to extract I get a CRC error saying the file is broken/corrupt etc.

I try to re-download the files but still get the same error. I have updated my winrar to the latest version but this still doesn't solve my problem, so I am unsure what is causing it.

I am using NOD32 Anti-Virus (but can't see this affecting me) and was using the Windows firewall, but have since switched that off and turned on the nvidia firewall that came with the PC, I know this is probably a weak firewall but I thought this may be causing the problem and something is blocking my connection to the internet, or something.

So if anyone has any idea what is causing this problem, or how to fix/configure something then please don't hesitate to let me know!

If you need any more info please feel free to ask.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, I had no idea where to put it!

    Thanks in advance!

This sounds like a software issue. Have you tried reinstalling winrar and your file extraction utility? Btw, the version of Windows may be relevant to the issue as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.

It could quite well be a software issue, but i'm struggling to find out what software is causing the problem... I have uninstalled and reinstalled winrar many times now but it doesn't seem to be doing anything, also what do you mean by 'file extraction utlity', do you mean other programs I have to extract files?

It just seems to be during the download process where something is going wrong. (Hense the reason for me putting this in the Networking section)

I originally thought it was a firewall issue but after switching firewalls off completely I still get the same errors.

If this seems like a software issue to the rest of the world then could I get this moved to the software section please.

I'm sorry. I was referring to the zip utility you were using. Some versions of Windows have zip functionality written into the OS.

Well I have 7-zip as well, but WinRAR will also extract .zip's too.

Incase people were wondering I have tried downloading using a download manager, as well as just through the browser itself, but to no avail. I have also tried downloading from firefox and Internet Explorer but to the same outcome.

A few things I can suggest if the Internet is the issue

    1. Safe mode with Networking. Sometimes, when there is any kind of problem on the system, a boot to safe mode helps narrow the possible issue. If this doesn't work, it's unlikely to be local software at fault.

    2. Clean Boot. Use msconfig on Selective Startup, disable all Startup items, go into Services, hide Microsoft's services, then disable all the remaining services. If it works now, one of your drivers is likely to be at fault. It could even be an add-on. You can narrow this by re-enabling Startup and/or Services items.

    3. Add-Ons. Open Internet Options in Control Panel. Delete all cookies, temporary internet files, and the browsing history. Set all security and privacy settings to the defaults. Clear the SSL state in content, and in Programs, open Manage Add-Ons and disable them all. If it works now, it is almost definitely an add-on that is at fault. Then re-enable add-ons, one by one or by group, until the issue is isolated. Often deleting the problem add-on is all that needs to be done, although occasionally they work properly when re-enabled. Don't count on that.
