Creating a backup

A friend helped me build my computer a couple of months ago and I need to create a backup disk in case of problems (I know I should have done it right away). When I use the back up wizard on Windows XP, it gives me the error message:

"The backup file name can't be used. D:\backup.bfk Please ensure it is a valid path and that you have sufficient access."

I've been planning on getting an external harddrive--I guess I'll be searching for one this week. Until then, any suggestions?
