Thinking on, there is a way to create a full image of your hard drive without the trouble of reconfiguring Master and Slave. Such an image could be restored to either the same drive, another partition on the same drive, or to another drive altogether. Technically it is not a clone so the drive holding the image would not itself normally be bootable, but in all other respects it is functionally the same as a clone.

To do so you would have to install an imaging program such as Acronis or Easeus Todo, and you would need to have connected a spare drive to which the image file would directed. But you need that for a clone too of course.

    Actually,
my computer has all the junk removed and is operating nice and quick now, plus I have the full 250GB,so ,as I wrote down all the programs I use reguarly,I now think I will keep it like this :)
Also now I use Google's Picassa for all my images and I sync all the time with my web albums,so I have not lost any of them.
I will keep the old HD and boot with my Xp if need be and do a repair and do "Fix Boot"
    Thanks for everyone's time.
