What are some things to do to prepare for this and to do after the update?
I read you should check your security after it is installed and .old will be removed in 10 days.

How can I tell if my machine is ok. I do not know where to look for the type of Dell XPS desktop I have. I tried Speccy.

If your system is Windows 10, Speccy tells you everything you need to know about the hardware, processor, RAM installed etc etc etc. Just read it. Even if you just look at the specs for your exact Dell XPS model number on the Dell site will tell you too.
Read those guides and just make sure your security software is full up to date.
Your hard drive needs to have at least 30% free space.
If you haven't run a disk cleaner lately (eg CCleaner or Wise Disk Cleaner) run it now in its default settings.
If you have many software programs that you never use or need - uninstall them.
The above are standard steps you should take for any Windows Update.

Speccy does not give the model number. I will look at the BIOS to see if it is there.

That's not relevant. SPECCY will actually tell you all you need to know. In any case, your machine came with a sticker on it with that detail and it also gave you a Dell Service Tag number. You have no need to look at the BIOS but if you know about that then I'm not understanding why you can't just read every section of the Speccy Report. Read the post above and the preparations steps and you wont then make is a lot more complicated than it really is.

"The table below lists Dell XPS desktop computers that have been tested with Windows 10 Creators Update. If your computer model is not listed, Dell is not testing the device, and drivers have not been updated for that model."

My model is not listed in the second link you gave. I have XPS 8300. I think this means Dell is not supporting my drivers but I have to update I believe as I did for the spring update.

It's irrelevant what Dell says about that system. You have Windows 10 already. To update to that (now very old) Creators Update, your system simply needs to be in good order. I have already listed those steps needed in post #4 which you have ignored: make sure all your security software is UP TO DATE; minimum 30% free space on the system hard drive; clean the drive if you haven't already done that; remove software you don't use or need.
Checking that the drivers on that system are up to date, simply run one of the MG recommended driver updater programs such as Driver Booster, Driver Talent or Driver Easy (make a system restore point *before* you do anything like that).
I can't make it any simpler than that, and it applies for every single major Windows Update since Windows was first developed.
Speccy simply tells you - in the SUMMARY section - what your hardware is. If it wasn't enough already you couldn't be running Win 10 now.

I'm sorry to upset you and thank you for your advice. I am 80 so I am not as up to date as others.

I'm not upset as it's your system. I was just trying to list for you the simple steps to take first before running the update.
Maybe someone else helping you to do that together, step by step, would be a good option.

Do you think it is a better idea to use driver booster or to leave it as is. Thank you

My opinion is that if you follow Max's recommendation to do a cleaning of junk files and have been getting regular updates, you should be fine to install the creators update.

@peterr I'm in a basically similar situation to you peter in that we have two Lenovo Thinkpads which Lenovo do not support for Win 10, so if an update should require a new driver it won't be available and they may not work properly or at all. The answer, as you well know, is to image your system from time to time. As updates are monthly then a monthly image guarantees you will always have a route back to a working system. Version changes like the Creator's update are not compulsory, only security updates are forced, so no issue there.

My Dell Latitude E6400 wasn't tested for Windows 10 either but, Windows 10 installed necessary drivers and when the Creator's Edition was installed, the laptop worked fine. I had to use Driver Booster to install one driver (and it wasn't one that was really necessary for the computer to function for what I really use it to do.

I'd be doing this in preparation and if you system is Windows 10 compatible now it will likely run the "creators update" when released in next few months, I have an original Surface tablet and its runs W10 and all updates so far good.

Just do a full backup before you update.
