I need some help with a red screen popup in google chrome stating I have an google chrome internal critical error and need to call some number. Is this a scam/virus? If so, how do I get rid of it.

That's a scam page... those used to comprise about 75% of the calls I took on the support desk per day. Some of the older people actually gave the scammer their credit card info... doesn't even involve me, but it honestly makes me mad.

Sometimes even without running into one of those 'scam pages', they call people directly claiming to be with Microsoft or some other reputable company and insist that you have a problem with your computer. Their next step is to walk you through allowing them remote access to your system... at which point, the show begins.

Believe it or not, they almost never infect or damage the system (not that that makes everything okay). Their goal is to sell you their 'service'. Which is... conning you. They'll show you the Administrative Events in the Event Viewer, which only displays warnings and errors... then maybe type the netstat command in the Command Prompt, telling you that all those connections you see there are hackers accessing your system.

Yeah... those guys really p*ss me off... exploiting and taking advantage of (mostly) older individuals that are more likely to have limited knowledge about computers. If they call you... play along for a while, and then finish by... I dunno... cussing them out? Giving them a fake credit card number, then laughing at them? Think of something good. How about it? Hmmm? :D

I'm sure they do... but as many calls as I've taken regarding this same thing, there was only one instance where... when the woman refused to pay them, they set up a password on the BIOS. From what I've seen and experienced over the two years in tech support and literally hundreds of calls involving these scam artists, their goal is to appear like a legitimate support service. Put on an elaborate show to impress their victim, hit them with a one time charge anywhere from $99 to $400, and be done.

They avoid any possible legal actions this way... no system damage caused, payment agreed upon, and credit/debit card information obtained with the victim's own consent, with their own voice. If you're thinking that just because most of these people are out of jurisdiction, that's not the case under the CFAA.

Buuut... again, yeah.. I'm sure there are some of them out there that do have malicious intent. I haven't worked in tech support for a couple years now, so maybe they've changed their tactics. Maybe the old scam is no longer working as much as they'd like, and now they're just straight out dropping scripts to steal personal info.

Either way, cuss these people out for me... please. Tell them what scum they are... somebody.
