I have an HD4870 512meg. I'm thinking of getting another one for crossfire, but 1024 megs. will the new card downscale to 512, or will it use all its 1024 memory?

The newer card will be capped to 512, and not use the full 1024. That includes if the memory speed or GPU speed is different, it will be capped to the lesser card.

    ok thx :)

but then, if everything downscales, what's the use of being able to crossfire different types of cards in the same family?

It still has the potential to use both cards for increased performance. But, it is there way of saying, now save your money and buy another of the other card.
