I currently have a HD4870 512mb by Sapphire. I'd like to crossfire with another one, but a different brand. (i don't know which one yet). Is it safe to do so? or will it be error-prone?

No, you should be fine, just make sure you get another card with very similar specs, and you will have no problems!

As long as the 2 cards have the same chip with the same amount of RAM and the same clock speeds, you will be fine.

If there is a discrepancy, it is likely that the rig will function, but the faster parts of the card will clock down to the slower speed of the other card.

Just out of curiosity, did you crossfire the cards?

If so, how much of a performance increase are you seeing?
