Okay, got it installed and saved a copy of a Word document then deleted the copy from Word.

When I opened Word, the copy document showed up in the "special" directory. I clicked on it and it opened in a readable format. Does that mean my hacker can read it, too? CryptainerLE didn't ask me for my password before opening it.

Just how safe is that program?

"then deleted the copy from Word."

That doesn't make sense, Lavendar. You can't delete a copy of a file from Word. Word is an application. You mean you deleted the copy from 'My Documents' perhaps?

If Word is able to open the documant without Cryptainer prompting for a password, there must be a copy somewhere else that hasn't been encrypted. Run a search using the document's filename as the search critera.

If your looking for a 'great' encryption program that will totally CYA you'll need to look farther. You best bet is total encryption i.e. TrueCrypt whole disk.
At work we use Credant, it is set up to encrypt certain file types, so it will encrypt .bak files as well as the .doc file, along with txt, xls, and so on.
I don't know of any 'freebies' that do that.

Or encrypt your file and run CCleaner to eraser *everything* in the temp. etc.

Cryptainer will ask for your password only when you open the vault you have created, so do ensure you are using a strong password with a mixture of alpha, numeric and symbols. When it opens you will see you have a new drive letter appeared in Computer - that's your cryptainer encrypted drive - and when that appears you can use the files inside it exactly as you would on any other drive, no passwords required. The files are not accessible by anyone else at all at any time, and when you close Cryptainer they will disappear.

Because of the way encryption works the program is completely safe as long as you use a strong password. It cannot possibly be cracked and so your files cannot be accessed either. If you continue to suffer file corruption after adopting Cryptainer we will need to start some hardware tests, as faulty RAM can produce the type of file corruption you have reported in the other thread.

Incorrect. Cryptainer does not password protect each individual file in the vault - only the vault itself.

I probably didn't explain myself very well. I made a copy of the document in word (adding -1) so I wouldn't lose the original. After I saved it to CLE, I went back to Word and deleted the copy I'd made.

See her TrueCrypt thread. It's too complex for her to use.

I can't get TrueCrypt to work for me. I'll take time tomorrow to delete and reinstall it. Somewhere along the line it told me I had an error in 32 bit program.

LOL You're right, Earthling. You're getting to know me, far too well, for the technical dunce I am. No offence taken because you spoke the truth.

I closed down to eat. When I came back in, I clicked on CryptainerLE and it asked for a password. I believe I have a strong one, but we'll see if he can crack it.

I think I have to remember to close down each time I store a document in Cryptainer. That way, he'll have to break my password to get at the documents. Bit of a hassle, but if it means safety, I don't mind.

Your files are safe even when Cryptainer is open, but by all means close it when you are not using it if that makes you feel better.

    It's late here, 'nite ;)

I hope you left yourself enough time to go out and have a good time.

I appreciate all the help you've give me and you deserve some fun and relaxation.

When I open, just as it asks me for my password but before I enter it, I'm told the program won't run because there is a "win32 error".

Tweaking told me I had a missing spool. Could they be connected?

mmm...you reported what sounds like the same error when trying to use TrueCrypt, a similar encryption program. As both programs are supposed to be good for Vista 64bit it seems you may have a system problem. Does the error repeat at every attempt to launch the program or does it sometimes start normally, as it did yesterday?

This time it allowed me to enter my password before telling me I had a win32 error. If I click on the short cut, the screen comes up but I can't do anything on it.

Is it possible I have a trojan? I've seen mention of a win32 trojan around. I've run Sophos but it isn't catching anything. Is there a better free program? Tweaking isn't catching anything bit I just downloaded IObit. I'll run that to see if it finds anything. Back in about two hours.

There have been times when CCleaner Registry has mentioned a missing 32 spool error. I fix it but it appears again later. When I had my OS replaced, they installed 64 bit. It used to be 32 bit. Would that make a difference?

Iobit! We had to give that the elbow a couple of weeks ago when we discovered you were running multiple AVs. What else have you downloaded recently in your efforts to combat this hacker?

The only AVs you can run while MSE is installed are 'on demand' scanners such as MBAM or SAS. Iobit is out.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I thought I saw a warning about a certain program (gone now) but I already had it running.

Apart from the Kodak printer driver, I don't download from anywhere but MG. I went through and deleted everything downloaded recently. The only thing still there is Vista Services Optimizer. Perhaps that's the problem.

After I ran Iobit Toolbox, all my security programs disappeared, even MSE. I had to delete it and reinstall. Spybot would not function either. I then deleted every Iobit program I had, reinstalled Spybot which found a program that IE uses to search the Internet. Dream-something or other that first came onto my PC with a free program you offer that downloads u-tube items and movies. I deleted it and thought the search program went with it, but it didn't. It's also gone now.

I used Revo Uninstaller to remove programs, and initiated their 4th option to clean all residue.

Running various scans took time. I've run Tweaking twice. Each time it tells me I have 16 errors and fixes them. There are places it can't access but it runs through things so fast that I can't read what they are.

CryptainerLE is still telling me I have a win32 error.

I managed to find a phone number for cyber stalking and hacking at our local police site. They have various records and file numbers, so they are investigating.

My usual practice, when I sign on in the morning, is to update MSE and run a quick scan, then I play a couple of games while I drink my first coffee. This morning, I went straight to Webmail instead and found it was already in use.

Right now, I need to know which are the best programs to install for safety. I have the following installed:

    CCleaner
    MSE
Windows Firewall and Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
IE installed and enabled but not used
    Chrome (incognito)
    Spybot
    SuperAntispyware
    Process Hacker 2
    Novirusthanks
    Winpatrol
    Secunia PSI
    Protect Me
    Protector Plus
    Tweaking

Spybot includes a hacker and rootkit checker, I believe, but I need a malware checker/defender, and something to handle key logging. If you can suggest any other programs, preferably free, I have enough GB on my PC to handle them. I prefer not to use Comodo products because they don't all work in Canada.

Again - my apologies for not getting back to you sooner but Toolbox took care of that and I took a long time to get things reasonably 'normal'.

I tried to download MBAM and encountered a run time error.

By SAS do you mean SuperAntiSpyware? I have that installed and I ran it last night.

We recently went over this whole business of not having more than one realtime AV and now, not only were you reinstalling IObit but we now see you also have Protector Plus - yet another realtime AV. I give up Lavender. I'm virtually certain that your problems have their roots in the plethora of AV and AS programs you are constantly installing, and I cannot have any confidence at all that you will stay with any recommendations made. In fact you've just proved that yourself by reinstalling IObit.

I'm just about to go on holiday and can only hope someone else can put you on the straight and narrow. I certainly haven't been able to. Sorry.

Sorry, but unless a program clearly states it's an AV program, I don't know that it is in conflict with MSE. Protector Plus has been uninstalled. Which others should I get rid of? How do I get rid of residues of AV and AS programs?

I ran a search of IObit but nothing shows up. All deleted, so which program is an IObit?
