Has anybody used or know anything about a software app called CrystalDiskInfo. It allegedly tests the state of your hard drive. I am suspicious my hard drive may be on its way out. Having discussed this with my brother via email he sent me CrystalDiskInfo.

I have run the app and it says the hard drive's health status is Caution, whatever that means. What I don't like about it is it gives you a result in literally seconds. I could be wrong but I don't see how your hard drive can be checked so rapidly.

If my hard drive is on the way out I'm going to have to replace it. However, I'm not going to the expense of buying a new hard drive, having it fitted and having to buy Windows 10 on the say so of an app I don't trust.

So if anybody has any knowledge of CrystalDiskInfo they would be happy share I would like to hear it.

No need to be so suspicious. CrystalDiskInfo is a well respected software available right here at MG. It gets its results quickly simply by reading the self monitoring data that all NTFS disks maintain. As your disk is reporting Caution then you would be well advised to exercise some. There is no need to buy Win 10 for a replacement disk as all you need do is run the system backup feature in Win 10 Backup. This will create a backup file which can be used to replicate your current system in its entirety to a replacement disk. Replacing a disk is usually a fairly simple task but if you have never opened a computer it may be better to get someone else to do it.

Thank you for your answer. It helps a lot. As ScanDisk takes longer to run I wasn't sure how this app could give instant results.

I'm not going to use the PC until it's got a new hard drive unless I have to.

I may even look for vids on YouTube how to do it myself.

    It’s a great little program.
If it’s saying ‘Caution’ then there are hard drive errors, I would backup immediately using imaging software like Macrium, then when you purchase & fit the new hard drive you just use their boot USB (which you create after downloading the program) & restore the image.
