    whats cable select?

it worked on one computer but i moved it to another computer

xp seemed to load ok but win 98 fdisk seemed to have the drive at 10 gig and not 80 or 76 gig

i have to get rid of all this junk from the 90s

I sometimes found that CS would muddle up things

Just jumper hw as primary or secondary and use correct connector on lead

so all along one of them had no jumper at all i see and it worked anyway...i wonder if it will work better if i put a jumper on master

im sick of dealing with all this junk

Cable Select (CS) is the name of the process/protocol where the motherboard's EIDE (PATA) interface determines which drive on the EIDE cable is Master (MA) and which is Slave (SL) and it does this by the position/connector the drive is attached to.

EIDE drives need to be connected to the cable in specific ways.
    • With two drives, if you use CS on one drive, you MUST use CS on both drives. You cannot mix CS and MA/SL on the same cable.
    • If one drive, it will always be the Master and connected to the Master end. The jumper can be set to CS or MA.
    • If two drives, the primary drive will always be connected to the Master end, and the secondary drive to the Slave. Jumpers on both drives must be set to CS or the jumper on the Master drive must be set to MA and the jumper on the Slave drive must be set to SL.
BTW, it is easy to tell which end connects to the motherboard and which to the Master drive. Holding the cable in front of you, one end connects to the System/Motherboard. The other end connects to the Master/Primary drive. The Slave/Secondary connector will be in the middle, but positioned off-center, slightly closer to the Master end.

My apologies for the crude and totally insensitive language but if the cable is not labeled it is easy to remember which connector is which as "the master always keeps his slaves nearby".

Of course this is no longer an issue since SATA is the current drive interface standard and there is always only one drive per SATA cable. So there is no Master or Slave drives with SATA.

If there comes a time when two drives per cable occurs, I am sure they will be labeled Primary and Secondary or something similar and not something so insensitive and politically incorrect.

One note on Digerati's excellent post: the hard drive controller resides on the EIDE drive itself. When you set one drive to Master and the other to Slave, the controller card on the Master runs both drives, and the controller card on the Slave is disabled. This is why you can't have two Master or two Slave drives on the same cable.

My rule of thumb was to set the bigger drive as Master and the smaller drive as Slave, under the assumption that the bigger drive has a more current controller and should have no problem handling a smaller drive.

Why would you assume that? That really is an invalid assumption. Bigger does not automatically equate to newer. It doesn't equate to better or faster either. While the biggest drives tend to be the newest, smaller drives with the latest technologies have always been available too.

I never worried that sort of thing because the speed of the controller was never and still isn't the bottleneck when it comes to hard drives. It is the actual mechanic seek times along with the read and write times.

On my EIDE systems my rule of thumb was to put hard drives on Master and optical drives as Slave. When I had two hard drives, I put them on separate cables with both as Masters. In later years, some motherboards only had one EIDE connection, but that was to free up space for SATA connectors. And if the board supported SATA, I always used them instead.

No, sorry but it is not true that the controller on the Master runs both drives, nor is it true the controller on the Slave is disabled. When two drives are attached, both controllers remain active and have specific functions - including critical communications between the two drives. And the Slave's controller board is still needed just to read and write data on the drive, and to communicate directly with the motherboard's EIDE interface. The controller board is also where the drive's buffer is located. If the controller on the Slave was disabled, the drive would not work at all.

See the How Stuff Works article, How IDE Controllers Work and note the following,

windows 98 will not run with Ethernet or wireless? its nice to turn off internet and just watch screen savers from 98 etc

    sick of all the news

if my drive broke is there some adapters i can use for a sata thats run on this old 98 computer? if i had to buy a sata drive?

do they still made IDE drives?

Jumpers do get lost. Typically there is a diagram on the drive's label showing the different jumper configurations.
I don't think so but there are adapters.
