I have a program called ctfmon.exe starting with my computer. I removed it from my registry 3 times and it keeps coming back every time I reboot. I have checked up on the internet and some people say its a part of Microsoft Office, however i do not have Office installed. Some people say there is a virus with this same name, Im a little worried. I have scanned the file with AVG and also scanned my whole system with AVG, Ashampoo AntiSpy, and Windows Defender which all say Im safe. Is there any sites anyone knows of that I can send this file to and get it checked out for free?? It may be nothing but better safe than sorry eh? Please help!!! confused rolleyes

Not always part of Office, but comes with XP too and possibly MS Works, below will explain all as this file is a legit one

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599

try the steps above but if your worried its malware then you will have to complete the below and attach all the logs, in this thread.

Our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I have read the M/Soft site and am no better off as it talks about Office. I have however got Works and XP. I might just leave it as my system seems to be ok. Is the protection Ive got resonably good would you say?

AVG Free / Ashampoo AntiSpyware / Zone Alarm Free / Windows Defender

They would have come up with a warning if it is malware wouldnt they?? confused

You protection is fine. You should also take a look at: How to Protect yourself from malware!

By the way you can stop ctfmon.exe from loading. How to do that is described in the link that Halo gave you.
