I used to be pretty good in the backup world. Time moves on, and I haven't kept up.

If someone has 1Tb of data (ah, memories of my first Tb disk array. 4 full racks it was.), what's the best way to back this up these days? In times past it used to be tapes (with the usual rotation and offsite storage). Have things changed, or is tape still king for backup?

Looking at: backup disk (more fragile than tape though, and you still need several for a decent backup rotation), DVDs (need LOTS per day, haven't done cost-per-Gb calculations yet), no backups because RAID will take care of it (LOL! Yeah, right.), etc.

What are you lot doing these days for backup?

Nah, just the old days. These days is pretty good actually. 1 Tb drives? Awesome stuff. Gigabit ethernet? Cool. Software RAID built into Linux kernel? Can't beat that. Lousy greedy 2-bit low-rent mostly incompetent internet providers on Vancouver Island? Well, that's a bummer. But they used to be lousy greedy 2-bit low-rent completely incompetent internet providers, so we're seeing a little progress.

I've considered doing that actually for the "full" weekly, with incrementals being done to DVD. Then take the full backup offsite in case of explosion (with this client, it's a possibility). Unlikely to get more than 4Gb (or even 8Gb) of changes in a week, so it should fit on a single DVD. Hmm... there might be something to that idea. I lose the archival monthly full backup, but I might be willing to live with that.
