Need some help. My HP shuts its self down here and there. The cursor will freeze and the system will lock up. The only way I can get by this is to shut off power. Other times it just shuts off. Cleaned the inside, it was dirty. Same problem. Change power supply, same. Any suggestion before I take it to Best Buy. Ckdsk hadno report or I don't know where to find the results. Hd, mobo ?

    Please help

Have the same problem with one of mine since the day I built it, unfortunately I can't seem to find out whats wrong with it. I even took it to a so called expert who swears it was fine & it never did it to him in the two weeks he had it. As soon as I got it back it happened again :mad

Mine also locks up a lot on start up & sometime takes three or four times to start up. Rarely does it once its running, mainly on start up or shortly after.

Sorry I wasn't any help, hopefully somebody will come along with some useful info.

Is your fans running correctly and its not over heating?

I assume so, I even put an extra case fan in when I built it. Could it maybe the cpu heatsink fan thats not up to scratch? In the back of my mind I always wondered if I out enough thermal paste on top of the chip as it was the first time I ever built a machine.

I also get the message "Intel cpu uCode loading error press F1 to resume" I have to then press F1 before it will start!

Its from there that I normally have the problem as it freezes on the windows load up screen & I have no choice but to hit the reset button & start again.

This pc starts fine but it shuts down sometimes in a 1/2 hour or 2 hours.

Thanks for sharing and good luck.

There is athread about your problem, I think it was the mother board.

    What model HP?

If I understand correctly, you have two different problems. At times the computer will lock up, become unresponsive, and you have to shut it off to regain control. At other times, the computer just shuts down.

Open task manager and copy all the processes running. Open notepad, paste the list into notepad and save it as a txt file. Attach that txt file to the post where you post the model of HP.

It might be software causing the freeze up. It sounds like hardware causing the shut downs.

HP media center # PC m7360n. I opened the task manager but it will not let me copy the info, could you please tell me how to get this posted.

Yes, there is two problems that I thought where associated with each other. I don't really have a clue. Thanks for attemping to put me in the right direction.

My fans come on full blast at start up, then they slow down. They stay on and the air flow appears to be good. Before I cleaned the cabinet the fans made a lot more noise, maybe due to them being very dirty?

Sorry, my bad. I had forgotten how fussy task manager is by allowing on one item to be highlighted at a time.
If you know how to take a screen shot, do that, save it as a jpg and attach it to your post.
If you don't know how to take a screenshot, then unfortunately the long hard way is to open word or notepad and type the processes you see (just the names not the other things behind them). You can skip System Idle Process and System because those are standard. It is all the other items, most with .exe after them that I want to look at.

Wow, to compare...you have 59 processes, I have 26 in XP and 34 in 2K on my main computer.
It will take me some time to research and see what most of these are. There are 9 svchost.exe entries so I'd have no idea what services they refer to.

I think some of these might be causing the freeze you experience. When lots of things check for and download updates, that can make a computer appear to freeze as they work.
I have Sunbelt Vipre installed on my 2K part and when that checks for an downloads updates, I get a slowdown and if I'm playing a game, that will freeze.

First I recommend that you download and install WinPatrol (there is a free version - select that)
    http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
this will be an easy way for you to enable and disable the items that are in Task Manager.
If something appears to not work correctly, you can go back in and enable it.

Here's a start on the processes. I will do several over the course of a few days.
    1. IANNTMON keep, it has to do with your Intel chipset
    2. spoolsv keep, that has to do with printing
    3. ehSched keep, Media center updates
    4. hpsysdrv dump, HP checks on the number of recoveries you've done
    5. svchost keep unknown what it is attached to
    6. MsMpEng ? it is an anti-malware that has to do with OneCare and Windows Defender; if you run this keep it, otherwise dump it
    7. Updates from HP dump
    8. hpqtra08 ? it uses excessive system and memory resources but if disabled the scanner buttons won't work. You can still scan but the buttons are inoperable. My advice keep it off until you know you want to scan and need to click the buttons then enable it, reboot and start scanning. When finished, disable, reboot and gain back your resources.
    9. lsass keep
    10. services keep
    11. winlogin keep
    12. Google Tool Bar Notifier dump
Apparently it isn't easy to disable so I found a site that shows you how to do it and prevent it from coming back.
    http://www.online-tech-tips.com/google-softwaretips/what-is-google-toolbar-notifier/

That's a start. I will look over some other entries when I have time.

    Round 2:
    1. csrss.exe keep
    2. faAgnt.exe this has to do with firedog (a windows program) disable
    3.ctfmon.exe disable and here's a how to
    http://www.pchell.com/support/ctfmon.shtml
    4. ehrecvr.exe since it can cause excessive CPU usage, disable it
Do you have Cyberlink and/or Nero installed? Those two cause problems with this. Someone removed both programs; we don't want to go to that drastic a measure.
    5. smss.exe keep
    6. mDNS Responderit has to do with iTunes so I suspect you have to keep it
    7. iPod Service for you I suspect it is necessary
    8. winssnotify.exe has to do with OneCare Live; if you use this keep it, otherwise disable it
    9. iTunes Helper keep
    10. arservice Always Ready service has to do with hibernate on a media center computer that is HP or Compaq so you have to keep it
    11. HP Product Research disable
    12. edhtray again this has to do with the Media Edition of Windows so you have to keep it
    13. hpwuschd2.exe disable
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/HPWuSchd2.exe.html

It seems to be getting worse. The cursor stops moving and then the monitor blinks, then the pc shuts down. It boots back up by it's self. I disable all put google and ctfmon. I followed the procedure and cftmon came back. Google toolbar does not have the settings button that is out lined in the procedure and comes back ever time.

So the pc doesn't shut down - that means all dark, no power. What it actually does is reboot. Is that correct?

You need to turn off automatic reboot on error so we can see what the problem(s) is.
Right click my computer>properties>advanced>startup and recovery. Uncheck automatically reboot.
When there is a problem you will get a blue screen with white printing called BSOD. Write down the first stop error. It will be something like 0xC00000ab where a and b can be numbers or letters. There will probably be some words with the error. Right the words down and post here.

Next string of items...I want to finish this up so I can get rid of some notes.
    1. jucheck disable
    2.IAAnotif keep
    3. issch disable
    4. kbd can keep or disable; allows special keys on keyboards
    5. jusched.exe disable
    6. AppleMobileDevice don't know; it appears Apple chooses to have a lot of things when you have an iPod and use iTunes
    7. RTHDCPL.exe disable
    8. explorer.exe keep
    9. RMSysTry.exe keep
    10. wmiprvse keep
    11. taskmgr shows up whenever you click on task manager so it isn't a process that runs all the time
    12. ELService keep

  18. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

    Keep:
    1. winss
    2. msfwsvc
    3. McrdSvc
    4. alg.exe
    5. ehmsas.exe
    6. RmSvc.exe
    7. OcHealthMon.exe
    8. nvsvc32.exe
    9. dllhost.exe
    11. LSSrvc.exe

    disable:
    10. MDM.exe
    12. jqs.exe

For MDM, also open IE and then click on Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and under Browsing be sure there is a check/tick in front of Disable Script Debugging
