How can one tell if a Laptop has "lost" its Internet capability. My Laptop just suddenly stopped connecting to my wireless system. Using Control Panel would indicate that it has "No Internet Connection capability". Geek Wannabe here.

Try your control panel them click the System icon, then hardware, and then Device manager and look for any yellow triangles or question marks depending on your OS. Let us know what you find.

Wireless adapters (and wired ones too) very rarely just fail at the hardware level. Loss of internet connectivity is almost always a software or driver problem. Follow Viking's suggestions above and let us know what you find listed under Network Adapters in the Device Manager.

On a HP Presario C700 Dual CPU using Windows Vista Home Premium. Followed instructions - Nothing Yellow as described in any area. Under Network Adapters have two items: Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter and Realtek RTL810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Both say "Device working properly" when I double left click on them.

Upon power on I get Screen Notice from Yahoo Messenger: "Yahoo messenger cannot initalize a required network component - please exit and try later."

When I Click on Internet Explorer get screen "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click "Diagnose Connection Problems" I get a small window reads "Windows cannot resolve the problem. Please contact your network administrator or internet service provider".

Do not have a network set up - work off Wireless system that works great on other computer even tho the other computer has Yellow ? in front of Other Devices and sub of: Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus; Ethernet Controller; PCI Modem; SM Bus Controller; and Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

Thanks for responding and any help you can give me.

    Jim

You really should install all of those missing drivers. It's not a good idea to run a PC without all the drivers installed. It won't really 'hurt' anything, but the system is not running up to it's full potential. Anyway... Do the other PCs on the router use a WEP/WPA key to connect? Does this PC connect when 'hard wired' to the router? You should also follow the steps in this article to check for and repair Winsock and TCP/IP corruption. If you look on the bottom of the laptop, you'll see a small white sticker with the exact model number on it. The series number is C700, the model number will be something like C712nr (for example). Post that number and we'll try to find out what's on....

Computer is a C782N R (that is # @ bottom of White Label on back) - P/N #: KN987UA#ABA. I have used Cables Direct to the Router and Direct to the Modem and the bad Laptop will not connect. When put cursor over the small Icon on bottom right of Tool Bar the following pops up: "Connection status unknown. The dependency service or group failed to start." This Icon is apparently related to Networks - and I have not set any up. When I click on Internet Options in the CP and then click on Connections - Then Click on Setup (to Set up an Internet Connection) I get another popup that reads: The wizard cannot continue. The wizard is unable to continue and needs to be closed and run again later. Contact system admin or Tech Suport" - It is as though the computer does not even recognize that the Internet exists. HP Wireless Assistant shows Installed Wireless Devices as: Wireless LAN Status ON. When I click on the Wireless LAN name I get: Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter. Sorry am such a bother. Thanks again.

Turn off the modem (it does have a memory and might expect to see a certain computer) for about a minute then connect the bad laptop directly to the modem and see if you can get on the internet.
