D drive problems

i have never had a problem before, but today i tried to run a cd in my cd/dvd player, and it did not load. i tried to go to my computer to open the D drive, but it was not there at all. i tried several ways to access the d drive, but keep getting the same message. D:/ refers to a location tht is no longer available..... i have not changed anything in the last few days, except i did update to the new internet explorer. no other changes. when i put the disk in, it does seem to be booting, as it makes the noise and the light on the side is also on. what do i need to do to get this to work? thanks for your help. This worked for the last one to ask
Opening Device Manager and then open IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click the first entry (the Controller) and select uninstall, click ok, then reboot. Windows should then find a new device and install the drivers.


I did offer this to others, with some, but, limited success.You can also try putting yor xp disc in , and >run ->sfc /scannow.
This can take some time, and you will need to keep pressing retry, as Windows replaces faulty files/ drivers.

the problem I had with that link was that it was staying parsed.
If you open the other link and then paste the number off of the end of the one that isnt working onto the end it works.

I believe this 'disappearing DVD' problem may have something to do with microsoft updates, Im about to try and find out. (should be fun rolleyes )

I even reformatted my OS partition, that seemed to fix it, then I did all of the microsoft updates and the problem is back. :cry

 

Yes, the link that failed to work was the one that linked to microsoft with the number of the fix- I will see if I can get it back.

I know there was a microsft update that caused this, but it did say which one, and I am sure I remember a download fix, but I cannot find it , at the moment.
I will look through my old notes, I am sure it is there somewhere.
