I have set up a passcode for my sisters wifi as it was not enabled by the tech that set up her D Link/wifi.

I couldn't believe that wasn't taken care of but I am not that wise about all aspects, so thought I would ask someone here.

I renamed her SSID to a private name rather then dlink, the way it was, and I set up a passcode so others that want to use their computer here at her place will need to login using that key. I figured her neighbors could bleed off her signal, but even if they aren't doing that, it seems to me securing your signal is best. Am I right?

My second question to do with that, is, I set it up on my computer because I was on her signal of course, but she was on her computer, which she said she was going to be off it, and I didn't know. Her connection is still on and she hasn't used the passcode yet? Do I have to set up her computer with the same info as I did on the router from my laptop?

Sorry if this sounds confused, I am a bit. denise

You're headed down the right path. You are correct in your thinking with regard to changing the SSID name and setting up a passcode in the router.

And, yes, the passcode will have to be saved in her computer before it can connect to the Internet.

Ok usaf;) I now am trying to get her computer/desktop onto the new SSID, and passkey. Her computer shows she is still hooked to the D Link (which I renamed on my laptop) and still insecured. I am nervous about making changes until I heard from someone here. First, maybe I should have began with changes on her computer, not my laptop? If not, can I just go into the router and do the same changes as I did on my laptop?

I tried to connect her using the passkey because the "new" SSID is showing on her list of available networks, but wont' connect with passkey (made sure it was exactly the same too). I don't want to lose her D Link connection, she'd kill me, I mean, lose the whole wifi connection so I don't want to make a mistake.

I tell you, she has a crappy ISP here in this town, and they have run her ragged, taken advantage of her being elderly, and I've all she has to help her (which ain't a lot, lol).

Thank you so much for your reply, denise

Ok, I see when I go into the router site online, that my sisters is all filled in just like mine, with new SSID and passcode. But on the Windows 8.1 "blue bar" menu on right it still lists D Link (old SSID name) and says it's connected to that.

Does it matter if I just leave as is, or do I need to somehow remove the D Link and just show new name of network? She is connected with an ethernet, don't know if that makes a dif. denise;) I am just wondering if her wifi signal is now protected, or if by the D Link that was an insecured network is still insecured?

Reboot both router and computers. Then, on sister's computer, select the router's new SSID and sign in with the new passcode.
