I think years ago I had this problem with a game, but it was so long ago I don't remember how to fix it. Went back to everquest, played for about a week without issue. On March 31 2009 around 11:45 I logged out and then attempted to log in during the day April 1, 2009. I am able to get the patcher up but when I click play I get the following error.

This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

So far I have tried updating DirectX, deleted all the .dll files in the everquest folder and repatched, have tried a Registry cleaner I beleive I use RegistryFix. I checked the Windows32 folder and seen several versions of the d3d9.dll.

    Hello,

Try downloading the .dll file from here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d9

and place it in your Everquest directory (where also your game .exe is located)
If that doesnt work you could try placing it in your system32 folder

Hope that will fix your problem :)

I remember having this problem before also, and I'm fairly certain I remember installing the correct directX to fix it.

Here is what the Sony Station support site has to say on your question. I see you say you've already tried updating Direct X. EQ uses Direct X 9.0c, and if I'm not mistaken will not run properly on earlier or later versions. The link on the support page takes you to a page on dx10, go figure. Here is a link to dx9 on the microsoft site. You shouldn't have to dig around in your system files to fix this one.

Try installing it, make sure your video card drivers are current, and you should be good to go. Failing all else, you can hit up the Sony Station support site for live chat with a sony cs rep. I've had good experiences when I've had to chat with them. Hope that helps and happy gaming, if you play on bertoxx you might run into me.

Ok was trying to figure out an easy way to get a better picture of what is going besides the nice everquest error. I ran a DxDiag and found the error.

    ------------
    DxDiag Notes
    ------------
DirectX Files Tab: The file d3d9.dll is an old version, which could cause problems. You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version.
Display Tab 1: Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 9 is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Sound Tab 1: No problems found.
    Music Tab: No problems found.
    Input Tab: No problems found.
    Network Tab: No problems found.

So it appears like two errors going on. I have updated the latest drivers for the Vid card and tried to run the DirectX update. Update is stating I am up to date. So if I download the d3d9.dll is it just a matter of dropping in the System32 folder and letting overwrite? Have a feeling it isn't that simple so wanted to check before I do it and the computer shuts down because I am messing with system files.

Downloading dx9 from microsoft will give you dxwebsetup.exe. Instead of trying to update, just run that file and it will reinstall direct x 9.0c regardless of whether or not you have the current version. That will replace the bad d3d9.dll file you have now with the original.

The error that you see under the display tab in dxdiag may be fixed after the reinstall of dx9. Was it corrected after you updated the drivers? If not, the best way to make sure you have the latest drivers is to download them straight from the manufacturer. I know the Nvidia site will recognize your vc and update you as needed without even hardly having to do anything.

It's usually a bad idea to mess with the system 32 files unless you know precisely what you're doing. Best to do what the Dxdiag is telling you to do and just reinstall dx9 fresh. ;)

Ran dxwebsetup.exe again, have done this a few times. Each time I do I get

    Installation Complete

DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary.

Did a DL for the newest drivers in March for the vid card from the manufacturers site.

Then I'm sorry to say I'm stumped. You could give this directx uninstaller a try, I've never used it myself but considering it's available here, I'd trust it not to hurt to try. Other than that hit up the chat support at ms or sony, or maybe someone else will chime in with an idea. If I think of anything I'll post it. For that matter when you get it fixed I'd like to know how you did it! G'luck!

Edit: Saw this a few minutes after I posted, it's freeware, also from here at MG: dx uninstaller

This application will now exit", i dont know if the problem is on my notebook laptop or it is just no online games are applicable to my damn notebook. hahaha..

I have had this prob, multiple times. As someone said in earlier post, DL the file from the internet and paste it into your system32 folder. That will fix some times, and some times it is direct x issue, maybe wrong version, maybe just needs reinstall, oh, and after you paste the file, you will need to reinstall the game.

The problem seems to be that you do not have the correct drivers loaded for your graphics card.

If you are using the free version then that will most likley be why your video drivers are not configured with properiety drivers. Only the one edition contains the properiety drivers or the powerpack version which you can pay for.

From a console can you run the command glxinfo. If you are using the correct drivers you will see something like this in the output..
