    I would say plural.

But you can have "a crowd of one" - a bit like sheep.

Obviously, the word crowd is singular in any case because crowd only refers to a group of people, so its one group of people, therefore making it singular.
I dont think saying "crowds of people" makes sense.
    So its always singular.
    Now you learned something new.

Yep, as other words, such as flock (of sheep); pack (of wolves); school (of fish). Of course, there may be more than one of said crowd, flock, pack, school. You can "crowd things together", as in group.

Except that is what you say.
"There were crowds of people at the place", which indicates more than one crowd. So how many people are allowed in a crowd before they become two crowds? This needs to be determined in order to pluralize crowd.

Can we say poetato - potato???

    From the American Dictionary:

Crowd a noun 1. a large gathering of people 2. spectators; audience 3. colloq. a particular set of people - v

Therefore crowd is singular implying many people.

As for the sentence using crowds the dictionary has no reference to the plural, but the grammar check in word.doc see it in plural as correct.

There can be several smaller crowds but I personnaly prefer the crowd seemed to be split into smaller groups.

Then again it is possible that crowds gathered in several cities.

So maybe your question should be how much distance between any large gathering of people make it crowds and what impression on how you use the word will you leave someone else with?

"Crowd" is a singular plural. The word itself is singular (as in, a crowd) but it refers to a plural of another noun (i.e. a crowd of people). As said before, a flock of sheep is another one.

If you were to use the plural of crowd, you would be referring to a number of groups of people. For example at a football match you may have crowds, since there are many seperate groups of people who support each team.

That happens with any word. Try thinking about the word "pottery" for a while. Eventually you realise that it makes absolutely no sense.
