damned internet explorer help

hi guys i'm at my parents house and just tried signing into msn messenger. It's telling me i need to update which is fine but it won't install the newest messenger untill i update internet explorer.

currently they have internet explorer 5.5 and i tried to install internet explorer 6 but it won't allow me to setup messes up everytime. I read online that windows ME users need to update to internet explorer 5.5 sp2 before updating to MIE6. I tried installing that also but it's not letting me it says it can't connect to download the files and yes i'm connected.

so i'm kind of at a loss of what to do now and hoping someone can help me. I don't know what else you guys would need to know to help me so let me know if you need any further information.

the error message when trying to install 5.5 is "Setup was unable to download the required components. Please make sure you are connected to the internet, or resume setup again later"

the error message when trying to instal 6.0 is it begins instlaling then says "Setup was unable to install all the components please try again later."

 

Did you try my links above?

Also, check to see if there is a wininit.ini file within c:\windows

If there is, delete it and try again.

 

i tried both your links and accessing both the MEI6 and 5 setup files and ended up getting the exact same results even when the wininit.ini file was deleted

anything else?

These should download the entire package of IE. 70+ MBs....

 

"Please try again later." What is that suppose to mean? Maybe there is a problem with the download site. It would be good if they gave that error a bit more information.

 

yes thanks i found these also, i guess i will have to try and download this. unfortunately my parents live on a farm an only have dial up so i will let it run over night.

but from what i read i don't know if its worth the trouble, from what i've read it seems i need to install 5.5 sp2 first but i dont think windows has a place to download that from.

i tried downloading and installing mozilla but it won't let me open that either.

any other suggestions???

 

yes they like to give me vague error messages its very helpful BLAAAAAAAH

as said in my earlier reply i belive windows doesnt ahve the 5.5sp2 files still available

 

Run IEFix & see if you can then get it to co-operate.

 

...and what error code does firefox give ye?

the iefix didnt help.

i forget what firefox says but it cant even open the .exe file

This download will work on Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and ME.
