I'm wanting to buy one as a gift, they are not listed in consumer reports
any idea what a good one is?

I have had several, first one I got a while back for $400 from https://thevideocopilot.com/ was a vc-200 or something like that, you had to use their software because the the SD format was proprietary. The card corrupts a lot, which I found with the next few - seems to be a common thread. I have 2 from Ebay 1 & 2, one from MCM for the wife which I have not tried to pull the video yet, I bought a Falcon HD a few months ago, seems fine, but I'd most likely buy a Garmin next.

The flip down screen dvr worked best in the cheap catagory - it is low res. The Front & back unit worked until I plugged in the back camera, then the videos would freeze.
