Data Recovery Freeze

Hi, I recently got a virus and had to restore my laptop to factory settings. I have tried some data recovery software but they all seem to lock up half way through the search. Unsure whether this could be from the virus or just my computer itself. I'm just wondering whether anyone knows a way around this, or know a good data recovery tool. I am only really concerned with jpg's bmp's etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated, cheers Chris.

Recuva is another good tool and is free.

Most "restore laptop to factory settings" routines involve deleting/recreating partitions and/or formatting options: do you remember if this was a destructive reinstall?

 

I'm not too sure but I'd say it would have been. It's a Toshiba, one of the options was a complete format, the other was to revert to factory settings, it obviously still wiped everything though.

 

Then, yes - try one of the recommended recovery programs: if at all possible, run the program from a different physical drive, even a CD/DVD or flash drive...

If all else fails, and you must recover the data, then there are dedicated recovery labs available - I've used Ontrack before, but they can be quite expensive...
