I recently installed XP Home (thanks, Vista, for helping the price go down!). I wanted to do it in such a way that all our old settings, files, etc would be saved. As you've probably guessed, I ended up overwriting everything. I think the real coup d'grace was delivered when I eliminated the partition that had originally been installed. Does anyone have any suggestions on data recovery that might save my bacon? Also, the Home version seems to have wiped out my audio driver. Please help!:(

    Sorry.

From the way you explain things it sounds like when you installed XP you reformatted your hard drive. Which means you deleted the old partition and all files that were on it.

Your new install partition has been created over top of your old one.

As for the audio drivers if you know what sound card you have you can go to their web site and download the latest drivers there.

Thanks for the quick response, as painful as it was to read. I guess it was about time for some Spring Cleaning, anyway.

Thanks for the quick reponse. I did try that download, but had no success. The concensus of opinion is that the data is gone for good. Ironically, I updated to prevent just such an occurance. Oh, well. I suppose it was about time for a little Spring Cleaning, anyway.....

You should invest in an automatic backup program, you can also find on downloads page, (http://majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html), you can use a program like this one (http://majorgeeks.com/Cobian_Backup_d4739.html). I keep all of my important information on a jump drive, like the Seagate 80gb external hard drive. If you want simple drag & drop, the jump drive is the way to go, but if you are looking for convenience, one of the programs like Cobian will do. I have used Cobian from this web site before I bought a jump drive, and was happy with its use. I like the jump drive best though, it will not crash with the computer.

Which audio drivers are you missing?

I'm not exactly a novice when it comes to computers, but pretty close to one. The Sounds and Audio Devices Properties/Hardware tab lists Legacy Audio Drivers, says they're working properly but shows their location as Unknown. When I click on the Volume tab, it states no audio device is present.
I haven't yet invested in a separate sound card, so I had been running audio off the motherboard, which is an Intel D865PERL.
I appreciate your taking an interest in my little problem; I hope this info makes sense to you. Thanks, RJ Hanson
