Nevermind. It says you do need it. Don't know why though because it's not asking me what your password is.

    Update time :)

The large hard drive had been installed and setup with Windows XP with no Service Pack (as shown by the file creation dates), this probably led to a partitioning error because of the 48-bit LBA issue (TestDisk immediately picked up a partioning error). This meant that the drive needed to be cleared, repartitioned and tested before it could be considered safe to use.

I cleaned up the small drive and used my RecoverMyFiles to pull most of the wanted data over; there were 18 files which we failed to recover (we subsequently discovered this would have been due to the number of bad blocks).

We then cleared the large disk and created a new partition. During formatting, the PC came up with major errors = bad blocks :( Ran Data Lifeguard tools which gave up with the error message that there were too many bad blocks = RMA time ...

The drive was only shipped from WD in July so replacement is not a problem.

So, data recovery was a success, drive recovery was a failure.

Thanks again to Earthling for all the time spent trying to diagnose and fix this problem :).

... and thanks for updating me satrow. Although remote assistance is by far the most satisfactory way to help people I've long since given up on suggesting it, as it's always met either with a deafening silence or 'I don't think my husband would be happy about it' ;) From what you say about the state of the disk it clearly would not have been possible to get anywhere with it over a forum.

Well done anyway. Although my own efforts didn't produce any results I'm pleased that you have been able to, and I would hope the OP is too.
