Long story short.. outlook express was compressing files and something went wrong. Lost half of my folders on left side of express window. They are in appropiate .dbx folder on hard drive but not on express window. I keep a back up but can't get them to show up either. I need important information from some of these missing emails. Need solution or shareware program that works to convert .dbx to text or something usable. Amber convert didn't do me any good. Help!

If you look in your Recycle Bin, do you see any of your OE .dbx files there?

No nothing there. This happened back around the end of December and the recycle bin has been cleaned out since then...... why do I feel that all is lost now?

I don't believe Amber converter has anything to do with email.

And, that is OE's "Store Folder", right?
Where is your backup? How did you create it?

Did you interrupt the Compacting before it completed?

    Amber was incorrect...tried DBXtract.
Store folder is: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{E38B60C8-F3E6-41BF-A165-7E8BABF840C9}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Back up is an external drive with an auto back up of the store folder and I also copied the folder to my desktop.
Don't really know what interruped the process.... desk got bumped or what...but we know not to touch anything until it is done.

As a test, change your Store Folder to the folder on your desktop. Now, while OE display the folders and messages? If this does not work, you can change Store Folder back to the original location.

Note: I'll be away from my computer for some hours later today. I'll check the forum when I get back to get updated on the status of your problem.

I changed the store folder location and it didn't work. Going to take a break from it and try again later. When you do this process does it simply change the location and read what is in the new folder or does it copy from one folder to another? Break time.

Figured it out and tried it again and with no luck.

Tried it, didn't work. What gets me is that the .dbx files that I want to retrieve are there in my current store file and back up but they just won't show up on my express window. So I guess it is find a conversion program and go from there or they are just corrupt and it is a dead issue. Back to the old school.... hard copy of important emails. Can't thank you enough for your time, input and effort. Hopefully I can repay the favor some day....thanks again!
