    Hi there,
Please help! I'm getting some redirections in IE. Running XP SP3. Trend Micro Titanium.
I've been through your procedures as detailed in threads:
"Fixing Google Redirection / Hijacking Problems"
(could not work out how to do the DNS cache flush)

"Read & Run First. Malware Removal Guide"
(could not empty Trend Micro Quarantine Folder
    AntiSpy Sweeper found nothing
Malware Bytes - could not run, uninstalled, reinstalled, then:
"Create process failed; code 5 Access is denied"
Combo fix seemed to remove something called "mlkjkl.dll" (computer couldn't find it on restart.

Pretty sure I still have some dodgies, such as ddaaxy.dll (continuosly shows up as a resolved threat, exists in theSystem32 directory as a hidden file). There are some other similarly named (as in 6 letter nonsense names) files which seem attached to Rundll in the Hijack This log.

We get redirected to dodgy sites frequently. Something called feed.bizclick is common, so is Gomeo. There are others less frequent. Sometimes Windows Media Player opens up but I put a stop to it before it gets any further. Sometimes Windows asks if I want to download such and such a programme, which I naturally say a big fat NO to.

System is also running quite slowly, but I'm going to partially blame a wrongly placed hard drive partition for that too. Trend Micros help line didn't seem to have much luck in removing stuff. I find those dodgy six letter .dll file names in the start up list too though I am currently set to Normal Startup Mode as per the instructions in the earlier thread.

Thanks so much for your help!

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

COMMENT: If you are using a router then follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and Run exeHelper from Raktor
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Now run this: Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

    Now run this: Using MGtools

Now you need to attach (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) the below logs created while running the above scans
    • exeHelper log
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • MGlogs.zip - normally it is C:\MGlogs.zip - only attach this log from MGtools.exe DO NOT attach any logs seen in the MGtools folder.

    NOTE:
    1. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for Malwarebytes onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. Yes, you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Hi dr.moriarty,
Thanks for your very prompt response. Here's how I went:
    Reset Linksys WAG54G2 router.
Successfully downloaded and ran RKill.com and exeHelper and MG Tools.
Malware Bytes - didn't work. Uninstalled, reinstalled. When I go to open the programme, nothing happens at all.
    Logs attached.
    Cheers.

    Hi, outbackmum

*Other than the tools our guide instructed you to save there, I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ C:\Documents and Settings\Sara\desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

Please attach this SUPERAntiSpyware log to your next post:
    Step 1:
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 6:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 7:
Also - run this online scan and attach the results:
    ESET Online Scanner

    Step 8:
Please check to see if you are now able to run Malwarebytes'. If so, update its definitions database and run a "Quick Scan".

    Step 9:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • requested SASlog.txt
    • ESETScan.txt
    • mbamlog.txt if it now runs

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

By jove, I think you've done it dr.moriarty! Thank you so much!

I was able to follow the procedure without any problems.

I've done about 10 minutes of browsing and haven't been redirected at all. I haven't done a whole new restart though.

Perhaps I can just have a day to use the computer normally and report any problems.

Thank you so very much for your help. I'll be keenly awaiting your ideas of how this computer became infected and how to avoid it from happening again, and whether I need to take any additional security measures immediatley to protect my identity or financials.

I am still receiving alot of junk mail, addressed to my address. I guess it is out there now, not much can be done. It is mostly filtered to spam or junk folders.

Let's see what you can see in the logs.

    Thanks again.

    You're very welcome! :highfive

I'm thinking that was something that you allowed in because your infection seems to be linked to
You'll find a guide to tighten your security at the bottom of my final cleanup steps which follows:

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
