Is Event Viewer showing any System Errors? In my limited experience it is usually a software problem as opposed to a hardware problem, or at least a combination of the two. What is the manuacturer and model number of your PC? I assume you are using XP Home and Windows OS is up to date. What nonwindows programs are you using? Seems my time isn't my own. I'll be back...

I use MEMTEST86 to test my memory which is freely available to download directly from the author’s site. It's only purpose is to test system RAM (SDRAM, DDR & DDR2) and is incredibly easy to use. Simple download the CD .ISO, burn it to disc and boot from it.

If the program reports even one error, one or more of your RAM modules is faulty (unfortunately, it does not identify which module is causing the fault but a little bit of trial and error, some common sense and you'll soon work it out ;) )

BTW, the program will NEVER stop running and is designed to continuely test your RAM for as long as your PC is on. Once your happy you’ve identified an error (or not), reboot your system without the CD and your system will boot normally.

    Post the exact error message.

This (and the original) error may be nothing to do with memory. So also post some details of your system.
Depending upon the age of your system faulty motherboard capacitors are also known culprits.

Downloading Everest and posting the log file is a good way to do this
