Hi, I have a spare Hand-Me-Down PC which has two 256 MB SDRAM sticks. It has another two slots which my friend says are DDR1 slots. when I tried to upgrade to DDR1, Windows failed to start. I just want to know whether I need to make any changes in the Motherboard to make the slots function. Please suggest ........

First of all, there is no DDR1 as it's just called DDR and the next one is DDR2. Run Everest and see what you have in there as a motherboard, it maybe that your board is already maxed out with memory, or go to crucial.com and they will tell you exactly what's going on by running their application, much easier than Everest actually. You will get direct info as to what you have and you might be able to add.

If you're really curious about what you have in your computer and what kind of memory you can add, Crucial has a scanner that will tell you. Good luck. :)

What type of machine are we discussing here?

That's what I want to know as well... hence the scanner link :)

Hi, Thanks to all for the replies.Crucial couldn't help much as it failed to make a complete match. It showed Max memory capacity as 2097.521 Mb and installed memory as 512 Mb. Everest showed 2 SDRAM and 2 DDR slots. I'm also attaching a text file of Everest scan result.

Perhaps a change in BIOS is needed? Just a shot in the dark here.

Agree with that. I haven't been able to find a manual for this board.
Did find some different memory suppliers that made mention of the fact of a specific type of chip being needed for the memory. Could not find any specs on that memory, so that could be a marketing ploy or not.:confused

That's a shame, since a lot of SDR-DDR hybrid boards need you to move a couple of jumpers around before it can use the DDR slots. Without moving those jumpers the board is still going to the SDR slots looking for memory, but since they are empty...

That's a marketing ploy. They're trying to scare you into buying from them and not from someone who has the nerve to sell the same product at a lower price ;)

Any Tips for moving the jumpers for using DDR slots would be most helpful.I don't have the motherboard manual nor it is available on their site.

Thanks hrlow2. This is exactly my Mobo Manual's link. I have gone through it and found that I need to short about eleven jumpers to make a switchover to DDR. I am still trying to figure out the shortening process.
These Jumpers do not look like the standard ones. They are continuous and in two rows (6 on top & 5 at bottom).
