    Hi

I WAS running an athalon 64 socket 939 venice core 3700
The motherboard is an Abit AN8 Ultra PCI Express

    The memory is corsair 400mhz 2 x 512mb sticks

    Nvidia 6600 graphics card

    Sata 250gig harddrive

Operating system - Windows XP SP2

My computer was working fine, but one night it started to make funny noises, I thought nothing of it at the time as I was about to turn it off anyway and thought it must have just overheated.

The next morning when I switched it on it got right through to windows desktop but then shut itself down.

I rebooted and this time it got as far as Windows XP splash screen, but then shut its self down.

I opened it up and the fan was caked in dust to I carefully removed it and cleaned it out, replaced it and then tried again with the same results.

I tried re-seating the graphics card, swapping the ram sticks round, trying it with just one dimm etc.. but still with no luck

The problem got gradually worse were I couldn't even get it to stay on for 3 seconds before it shut itself down.

There is a digit display on the mobo that goes 99 87 83 90 98 99 really quick then shuts down.

If i leave it for a while then power on sometimes it will stay on for longer but always shuts itself down before loading windows

I turned it on earlier and got One long bios beep followed by 3 short bios beeps.

Google would indicate that this could be bad RAM or Graphics, but if I can't get it to stay on for more than 3 secs, surely there must be another underlying problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try taking out one Stick of RAM and then the other to see if that's the culprit or make a bootdisk of Memmtest86+ so you can check the RAM.

    What kind of noises?

What fan? If the CPU fan, did you use a fresh, clean layer of TIM? If not, see this.

Note that if damage occurred because of failure to keep heat trapping dust from covering heat sensitive components, then the damage may be permanent.

1 long and 3 shorts typically indicates video problems.

    HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys, right after I posted I decided I'd try and replace the power supply, I ruled it out being the power supply initially because it was still powering on but not for long... and it was a good power supply (supposedly) that cost me £50!!! So I was in doubt that it could be that....

However it was, I replaced it and all is running smoothly again and has been for 3 days!

    Woohoo!!!
