    Wanted to point-out a VERY helpful program I came across here at MG's ~ http://www.majorgeeks.com/AM-DeadLink_d2880.html ~ I had a BUNCH~!~

    Straight from their site:

"AM-DeadLink detects dead links and duplicates in browser bookmarks and text files. If a bookmark has become unavailable you can verify and delete it permanently. Additionally you can download FavIcons for all your Favorites and Bookmarks.

    AM-DeadLink is Freeware"!

I have tried that program twice. The last time was about June 2011 with Opera browser.

Both times, it really messed up my Bookmarks.

Fortunately, I had several backup copies of my Bookmarks and I was able to sort of decipher the structure of the Bookmarks file.
I had to splice in several large blocks of missing links.
It was rather difficult and time consuming.

It may work well for others, but beware and make backups.

GOOD GRIEF!!! I had no idea it could mess anything up! I figured it would either work - or not! Thanks for the post and the heads-up!!!

Some people may wonder why I didn't just Replace the messed up Bookmarks with the backup copy.

I had used the browser for some time and added more Bookmarks before discovering that some main branch folders were missing.

Since I didn't want to lose the new bookmarks, a repair was the only way.

Sorry, I do not know which version I had used.

Re: *CORRECTION!!! Dead Links? Duplicates? No Problem!

I owe everyone an apology here..I really jumped the gun on this post.

Best I can tell, this program did absolutely NOTHING for me (except waste my time), and, in fact, approximately 36 hours after I installed it I got a VERY ominous "hang" (freeze) of my machine (and so lengthy that I ended-up having to perform a hard shutdown)...(and some very odd "shadowing" (grayed-out) appearance on webpages...and this machine was exactly (and ONLY) two weeks old (to the day) when that occurred.

I made the post after I had run (used) this program, but before I realized that he had done nothing (again, other than waste a couple HOURS of my time being fooled by it!?!).

I uninstalled it yesterday and am not having any freezing or shadowing on webpages.

I wish I hadn't started this thread, and I wish the thread could be removed.

IMHO, you did not do anything wrong and no apology necessary.

For anyone who has a truck load of bookmarks/favorites, finding and removing dead links is a very attractive prospect.

I tried it twice, (if at first you don't succeed...), and as far as I know, I did not "misuse" it.

    Hi Glenn

Its worth floating these suggestions at times and no harm no foul, its just as mentioned some folk get positive results with software and some don't.

I have used this software for years with no issues for me, working in Windows 8 with it at present as I need to check for dead links in the 1267 bookmarks I have saved. I know that's not many but I have slimmed it down a few times over the years as I save all sorts of crud!

Thank you mjnc...I too, tried twice (to little/no avail)..but at least I learned that some things (despite a "4+" Rating here at MG's) just won't work in all applications (and yes, for better/worse, seems I've "acquired" over 5000 Bookmarks in Chrome, which have "followed" me to my new machine!) :-D
And hello again and a thank you to you too Mr DavidGP! :wave Your sage suggestions and cheery spirit are ALWAYS appreciated (and looked forward to!) in my posts! :wave :) :major
