I'm checking out a co-workers HP pavilion a744x computer. Initially, it would go the a screen that would have three choices; hit f1 for setup ect., but would freeze at that screen. I could not get into bios setup or anything. I decided to reset the bios and now I get nothing. The system and cpu fan come on, but that's it. Now I have a blank screen. I suspect a bad motherboard. Otherwise, if there was a different problem wouldn't there be a bios beep? Even if the problem is a bad cpu I should still hear beeping! Right??
The Motherboard is an ASUS PTGD1-LA Socket: LGA775

Beep does it have an onboard speaker?
Some mobos dont beep, some this feature can be disabled by jumper
Blank screen check video card, try another
Blank screen can be had for several other reasons, bad memory/psu/cpu even a short, something grounded or shorted, check all hardware for burn marks

Sometimes ya just have to test all hardware or even just try powering with the bare minimum hardware ( psu, mobo, cpu/hsf, one stick memory, onboard and or video card> thats it nothing else and see) ( you dont need and HDD or CD drives to power on self test or even boot to BIOS)

CMSO try long clear remove battery for 24hr, then dont try to enter windows, when power up go directly into Bios, if you get there check all settings then save & exit

ASUS is wright, but if it were me, i'd shut down the computer, remove all but one of the RAM sticks and check each one individually. Start up with one, then shut down, put in another and check it. I have seen a lot of machines act like they are in the stupid mode over bad RAM. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick responce. If the PSU was bad would the system and cpu fans still work? I do have another PSU I can try. This MB only has pci slots available (fortunately I have a pci video card that I saved just in case). So it doesn't seem to be the onboard video. I also tried unplugging everything (all drives)plus another stick of ram. However; I think I'll try another stick of ram just incase this one isn't compatible with the MB (I think the stick I tried might be a high density type). As far as the speaker? I don't know. I'll have to go look and see if this system has one. I'll go check all that now. Thanks!
PS, I didnt' know that the mb battery had to be removed for up to 24 hours. I thought I only had to be removed for acouple of minutes.
